Colts’ Jim Irsay weighs in on Jonathan Taylor extension after fixing fractured relationship

The relationship between Colts owner Jim Irsay and star running back Jonathan Taylor had been rocky all offseason.

Irsay even admitted Saturday that “things got off the rails.”

There was a back-and-forth on Twitter (and then on X, when the platform changed names), a holdout, a period of uncertainty and finally, on Saturday, a contract extension — when Taylor agreed to terms on a three-year, $42 million deal with $26.5 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports.

In a post on X after news of the deal broke, Irsay confirmed the extension and called Taylor a “SPECIAL” player who “deserves this deal.”

“It has been a journey,” Irsay told reporters on a conference call Saturday, according to the Indy Star. “There was a lot of work to be done to mend the spirit and the heart and look that everyone has their heart in the right place, and it doesn’t always come out that way when people are protecting themselves for their money and their family long-term.

The running back market has become a prominent topic of conversation the past seven months — especially considering the statuses of Taylor, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs — and when Barkley and Jacobs couldn’t reach deals with the Raiders and Giants, respectively, by the July 17 deadline for the franchise tag, Taylor wrote “Wow” in a social media post.

That was followed nine days later by Irsay revealing his thoughts on the running back market in a social media post, referencing the collective bargaining agreement that he claimed included compromises from both sides.

“To say now that a specific player category wants another negotiation after the fact, is inappropriate,” Irsay wrote. “Some Agents are selling ‘bad faith.’”

We have extended Jonathan! He's a SPECIAL player and this extension is important knowing the impact he’ll make as our team develops under Shane. I have no doubt he’ll continue to create highlight plays and memories for our fans. He deserves this deal and I’m happy for him.💪

That’s when his relationship with Taylor started spiraling, to the point where the running back — and first-team AP All-Pro in 2021 — requested a trade four days later following a meeting with Irsay and a designation on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp.

ESPN reported the previous night that everything about their relationship was “unraveling” due to tension between Irsay and Taylor that was “much worse than you think,” even with Irsay claiming that his controversial tweet wasn’t directed at Taylor.

This became a problem for the Colts and head coach Shane Steichen, too, because Taylor was — and remains — their best offensive player, someone who compiled 1,811 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in 2021 before only playing in 11 games in 2022 due to injury.

Rumors of trade targets and destinations continued into the season, and it was unclear if Taylor, entering the final year of his rookie deal, would even play a game for the Colts once his injury healed.

But one day before his first game, the contract extension was revealed.

The Colts have Taylor under their control for not only this season but also for the foreseeable future, as the team develops Anthony Richardson — the No. 4 overall pick in 2023.

Irsay’s relationship with Taylor, somehow and someway, was fixed.
