Mayor Adams visits migrants in Ecuador — fails to tell them not to come to NYC: ‘He just came and said good job’

QUITO, ECUADOR — Mayor Eric Adams dropped by a family shelter in Ecuador during his whirlwind migrant discouragement tour Friday — but he failed to tell any of the Asylum Seekers there not to come to the Big Apple, The Post has learned.

Hizzoner spent roughly an hour meeting with 10 migrant families at the shelter in Quito, as he kicked off day three of his Latin America trip that was purportedly aimed at dissuading Asylum seekers from heading to an already overburdened Gotham.

When The Post visited the Fundación Gotitas de Oblación shelter after Adams’ private meet-and-greet, staffers — who were blasting Jay Z’s “Empire State of Mind” — were shocked to learn of the mayor’s underlying migrant message.

“I didn’t know anything about that,” said one of the shelter supervisors, via a translator.

“He just came and said good job.”

Instead of using his time to persuade the Migrants not to step foot in the Big Apple, employees said the mayor was more interested in learning about the services the non-profit shelter provides — including how they help get migrants into permanent housing and to find them work.

Another worker added that he gave Adams a tour of the facility but the mayor never brought up migrants relocating to New York — or the US — at all.

City Hall reps did not immediately respond to questions about why the mayor didn’t forcefully try to dissuade migrants in Quito.

Ahead of the mayor’s trip, sources said the purpose of his southern tour was to use local news coverage as a media blitz to talk asylum seekers out of coming to New York City.

During a virtual press conference later Friday, the mayor described the four-day tour as a “fact finding” mission and stressed the need to “stop the flow of misinformation” migrants are receiving.

“We are hearing that over and over again from the migrants and asylum seekers, the misinformation. We are learning about Ecuadorian asylum seekers who came to America only to realize that they’ve been sold the lie they will be able to work immediately,” Adams said.

“We want to make sure that people come to New York City know what to expect, and they have the opportunity for a safe and dignified migration, one that can lead to the American dream; as I say over and over again, not to an American nightmare.”

“We want every single person who is thinking about risking their lives and their children’s lives to come to New York City to know the truth about what we are dealing with,” he added.

Following his stopover in Ecuador, Adams is scheduled to travel to Bogotá, Colombia where he plans to head to the Darién Gap — a dangerous jungle path that smugglers use to bring many asylum seekers from South to North America.

The mayor spent the first leg of his trip in Mexico.

The trip comes as the daily number of asylum seekers arriving in the Big Apple continues to soar, with the Adams administration bracing for a potentially record-breaking influx in the coming weeks.

“We used to get on the average during a challenging time approximately 300 migrants a day, we’re now seeing in areas of 600 to 800 a day. We believe that this month we’re going to see records levels because of the surge that’s taking place at the border,” Adams said.

“We are not going to be able to sustain the situation for migrants and asylum seekers and for long‑term New Yorkers who are also dealing with real issues around poverty and needs.”
