Neighbors of controversial Staten Island migrant shelter blast NYC Mayor Eric Adams: ‘It’s all lies’

Staten Island residents who live near one of the city’s newest and most controversial shelters for recent migrant arrivals claimed that City Hall has doubled down on the site amid a court battle and blasted Mayor Eric Adams’ handling of the crisis.

The furor over the conversion of the former St. John Villa Academy Continued to grow while the second day of Hizzoner’s sojourn to Central America saw Adams make a series of appearances in Ecuador aimed at discouraging migrants from making the trip north.

“They’re (City Hall) doing everything in secret and when they do say something, it’s all lies,” Scott Herkert, 53, told The Post.

“We have a mayor who at one point was welcoming migrants in, who now says the migrant influx is going to destroy New York.”

An estimated 100 migrants are now living at the former St. John Villa Academy Complex, according to island officials, who had last month celebrated a judge’s order barring the city from filling the location with asylum seekers.

However, city officials quickly received a stay, allowing the shelter to remain open and in operation.

“The judge told them they had to leave immediately and everyone thought we won the case and everyone was out,” Herkert added.

“Since the city filed its notice of appeal, it’s not just back to business as usual, they’ve doubled or tripled down.”

Those frustrations were shared by Margie, who also lives nearby.

“I don’t know if this is the mayor personally attacking Staten Island because it’s a Republican borough,” she said, declining to give her last name because she works for a government agency.

“They are pumping money into a facility that is flooding and falling apart, and they have to bus them all out again if the court rules it shut down.”

She added: “The mayor has never come to the shelter to take a look.”

Many of the migrants have traveled to New York from Central and South America, where they are fleeing political violence and economic turmoil.

They hope to be granted asylum, legal safe haven, and allowed to stay.

Those who seek asylum or another protected status are allowed to legally be in the U.S. while their case is decided by the courts or the federal immigration agency.

All told, more than 116,000 people have arrived in the five boroughs since the wave began more than a year ago — and slightly more than half remain in the city’s care.
