Why a quiet offseason is no reason for the Knicks or their fans to panic

Frustration is understandable.

So is disappointment.

Two big stars switched addresses, and neither one is located in New York City.

The favorites in the Eastern Conference, the Bucks and Celtics, got better right ahead of Training Camp, landing Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday, respectively.

I’m here to tell you the Knicks made the right choice by standing pat. There is a plan in place, and they are sticking to it. They are building internally. They are stockpiling assets for that one big star who makes them a legitimate championship contender.

Look, as currently constituted, I don’t think the Knicks are any better than they were last year. The ceiling is most likely a return trip to the Eastern Conference semifinals, barring unforeseen injuries, upsets or a star turn from someone unexpected.

That’s OK — for now.

Trading for Lillard didn’t make much sense, considering the Knicks already have a ball-dominant lead guard in Jalen Brunson.

Holiday, on the other hand, would’ve been a great fit next to Brunson. He’s an elite defender and an improved 3-point shooter. But he is 33 years old. He doesn’t change the Knicks’ status as a second-tier team in the conference.

And consider all that the Celtics gave up: Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon and two first-round picks.

Team president Leon Rose has not been a perfect executive. He has made mistakes, most notably the decision to draft Obi Toppin eighth overall in 2020.

But he has been wise to be patient. Not trading for Donovan Mitchell last year was the right move in hindsight. And waiting for a real franchise-changing talent is smart.

Obviously, he has to be ready to pounce when that player becomes available. But Rose has the Knicks positioned to land that kind of difference-maker because he has resisted the quick fix. He has not made the error the Knicks made by trading for Carmelo Anthony in 2011, overpaying for a player who did improve the team, but not by nearly enough.

Coach Tom Thibodeau’s rotation is extremely young. Julius Randle is the oldest player at 28 years of age. It’s not crazy to think that the Knicks will improve just through development.

Often mentioned in trade rumors, the 24-year-old Immanuel Quickley also may have a lot of upside for the Knicks.Noah K. Murray for the NY Post

That path worked for the Nuggets, last season’s champion. And you saw hints of it last season here, with Immanuel Quickley’s ascension and RJ Barrett’s strong postseason.

This is the healthiest the franchise has been in over two decades.

So far, Rose and Co. have made the right decisions. They haven’t panicked.

They are still, however, on the clock to land the big fish.

But settling for a smaller one that won’t change the current trajectory of the franchise much wouldn’t have been smart, either.

Postcards from Charleston

The Post’s new Knicks beat writer Stefan Bondy checks in from Charleston, where he is covering training camp. He’ll be writing next week’s edition of Inside the Knicks.

We thought he was stoned. Maybe tipsy. Clearly misinformed.

Mike Vaccaro, the venerable Post columnist, and I listened to the Uber driver, let’s call him Bo, warn us that the road entering The Citadel would be completely flooded in a couple of hours.

The forecast, however, called for uninhibited sun.

“People forget that Charleston is a marshland,” Bo claimed.

OK. Us northerners shut up about it. Forgot about it. We covered the first day of Knicks training camp inside The Citadel, the military college with students roaming the campus in full uniform, randomly standing at attention while walking to class.

Not so much a drop of rain.

Then, on the drive back to the hotel, myself and Vac were introduced to a king tide in Charleston. Just as wise sage Bo predicted, the road out of the college was buried in water. Undrivable.

Our new Uber driver, let’s call him Jackson, gave us the scientific lesson: Apparently a full moon, or a supermoon, recently caused a king tide and flooding in Charleston. The subsequent high tide on Monday, when we were driven by Bo and Jackson, pushed the extra water through the sewers. And voila. Flooding without rain.

Apologies to Thumper, first and foremost. And also to my father, a vegetarian of over 50 years and lover of all animals, especially those of the cute and cuddly variety.

My confession: I ate a rabbit. Not only did I eat that bunny in Charleston, I found it was delicious. It was served with grits and mushrooms at Husk. Don’t tell my daughter.

The big theme at Knicks training camp is improvement through stability and continuity, which is the right approach with only one change in the rotation from last season (swapping out Toppin for Donte DiVincenzo).

But there are some important changes to the support staff. The most notable absence is Michael Martinez, who was the team’s equipment manager for 31 consecutive seasons before he was let go in the summer, according to a source.

The other people no longer with the organization after last season: Gregg Schwartz, the former VP of communications; Erwin Benedict Valencia, the former trainer and physical therapist; Bandele Talib, the former assistant trainer; and, of course, Ike Azotam, the former video coordinator who left for the Raptors.

In a lawsuit filed against the Raptors, the Knicks accused Azotom of stealing thousands of proprietary files and forwarding them to his new team. Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau declined to comment on that situation Wednesday.

“It’s a legal matter,” the coach said.

Backup power

Josh Hart may be an undersized understudy at power forward behind Julius Randle, but his rebounding and defense allow him to create problems for bigger opponents.Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post

It seemed safe to assume that Barrett and Josh Hart would be serving as Julius Randle’s caddies at power forward following the trade of Toppin. Both were used there out of necessity at times a season ago in small-ball lineups.

But Thibodeau shut down that assumption on media day.

Yes, Hart will be seeing time at the four, but it doesn’t appear Barrett will be.

Thibodeau didn’t mention the 6-foot-7 Barrett as an option there, and Barrett said he hasn’t been told of any plans to play him at power forward.

Instead, the plan is to back up Randle with Hart and Jericho Sims.

Though that may be somewhat of a surprise, maybe it shouldn’t have been. The Knicks believe in Sims, and he did play in that spot last season when Toppin missed time due to a right fibula injury.

Though it did limit them somewhat last season on the offensive end, a two-big lineup with Sims and Isaiah Hartenstein made a strength — rebounding — even stronger. And the athletic Sims has the footspeed to defend on the perimeter.

Jericho Sims may not offer a boost to the offense, but his presence should give the Knicks plenty of second-chance scoring opportunities.Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post

It wasn’t a large sample size, just 128 minutes, but the Knicks’ offensive rebounding percentage of 37.9 in Sims-Hartenstein lineups was extremely high (overall, the Knicks were second in the NBA in offensive rebounding percentage at 31.8).

They were, it should be noted, outscored by the opposition by 3.1 points per 100 possessions in that alignment and averaged just 106.3 points per 100 possessions. It seems like something Thibodeau wants to explore, at least against big teams.
