In the days after the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama, one of the top basketball prospects in recent history, quickly emerged as the favorite to take home this season’s Rookie of the Year award. 

At one point in late June, the Spurs’ French sensation was a -225 favorite at DraftKings to win the award, far ahead of the second-favorite Scoot Henderson of the Trail Blazers, who sat at +350. 

But now, after a long offseason and a couple of major trade shake-ups in the NBA, the competition seems to have caught up to Wembanyama. 

Wembanyama is now at even Odds (+100) at DraftKings, with Henderson (+250) and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren (+300) not far behind the pair.

Every other rookie in this year’s class has odds of at least +1500. 

The odds movement for Wembanyama’s Rookie of the Year chances come after a good yet underwhelming NBA Summer League performance. 

During his first game, Wembanyama looked out of place and put up just nine points on 2-for-13 shooting with three turnovers. 

He followed that disappointing game up with a dominant performance in his second and final Summer League game, scoring 27 points with 12 rebounds and three blocks on 9-of-14 shooting

But the much-anticipated opening game may have soured bettors and oddsmakers alike. 

Also working against Wembanyama’s Rookie of the Year award chances is Henderson’s situation in Portland. 

In June, Damian Lillard had yet to make a trade request from the Blazers, leaving questions as to whether Henderson would truly be given the keys as the team’s starting point guard.

Now that Lillard is in Milwaukee, there’s no question as to whose team it is. 

Henderson will have plenty of opportunities to put up numbers on what likely will be a rebuilding year for the Blazers. 

Over in the midwest, Holmgren is also apparently cutting into Wembanyama’s odds.

Holmgren, who was in the 2022 draft but didn’t play last season, has been a sexy ROY pick all offseason, especially when his odds were sitting at +700 (FanDuel) in late June.

The Thunder are a popular pick to be this year’s breakout team, and if Holmgren plays a key role in a potential playoff run for OKC, he could very well end up with the award over Wembanyama and Henderson. 

All eyes will be on training camp and preseason for this rookie trio.
