ESPN’s Sean McDonough shades Rays for playoff attendance: ‘Not sure we can call it a crowd’

The Rays’ poor playoff attendance at Tropicana Field did not go unnoticed, at least not by those working inside the ballpark.

During Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series between Tampa Bay and the Rangers, a 7-1 Texas series-clinching win, ESPN play-by-play man Sean Mcdonough took a shot at the sparse Crowd on Wednesday afternoon in St. Petersburg.

With the Rangers already up 4-0 in the top of the fifth and putting runners on the corners after a single from Robbie Grossman, the home crowd was unhappy with the performance of the Rays.

Though, in his mind, McDonough didn’t think the attendance — which was officially listed at 20,198 — was large enough to deem it “a crowd.”

“Some boos starting to come down from the group,” the announcer said. “I’m not sure we can call it a crowd. The group here at the Trop.”

The comment was met with a hearty laugh from Tim Kurkjian, who’s been working during the series as an analyst.

At one point during the seventh inning, the ESPN cameras panned to a nearly empty section in the upper level of the ballpark, showing a fan in a Rays T-shirt sitting by himself.

“Bob Uecker is here,” said McDonough, referencing an old Miller Lite commercial where the legendary Brewers announcer is seen sitting by himself in the nosebleed seats of the old Milwaukee County Stadium.

The crowd was actually larger than Tuesday’s Game 1, which checked in at just 19,704.

That figure was the lowest in the postseason — in a non-COVID year — since Game 7 of the 1919 World Series, per The Athletic.

According to The Society of American Baseball Research, the attendance figure was so low in that game over a century ago because of a mishandling of ticket availability from the Reds.

Between the two games at Tropicana Field, the Rays drew 39,902 fans, which was a smaller figure than both the Phillies and Brewers drew in their respective Game 1s on Tuesday night in Philadelphia and Milwaukee.

The Twins, who started about an hour and a half after the Rays on Tuesday, drew 38,450 at Target Field in Minnesota for an afternoon game.

It was a rough series overall for the Rays, who were outscored 11-1 in the two-game sweep.
