Jets eliminating Breece Hall’s ‘pitch count’, have Dalvin Cook optimism

Nearly one full year after his promising rookie season campaign crumbled on the Mile High grass, Breece Hall will return with the Jets to Denver this Sunday recuperated from the season-ending knee injury he suffered last October.

Hall tore his ACL against the Broncos during his seventh NFL game last Oct. 23, but he’s shown glimpses of the breakaway runner he was prior to the injury in limited carries during the Jets’ 1-3 start with the potential for an expanded role beginning in Week 5.

“From an opportunity standpoint, there is no pitch count with him anymore,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said before practice Wednesday in Florham Park. “We would love to get him going, but at the same time, we have a lot of guys we want to get the ball to.

“We just have to find a way to distribute the ball the way that’s best for the team and make sure we are scoring points.”

Hall, who wasn’t removed from the PUP list until Aug. 15, has ripped off a couple of chunk runs in the first four games — including an 83-yard scamper in the season opener against the Bills and a 43-yarder Sunday night against the Chiefs.

But he is averaging just eight carries per game and he’s managed only 84 yards on his other 30 carries.

“I feel a lot better. I think the hardest part of coming back was early in training camp just dealing with back-to-back practices and a lot of soreness,” Hall said. “Now I’m just able to go out there and be myself every day.

“I don’t really have any restrictions anymore, so that’s been good.”

The 22-year-old Hall categorized his return to Denver as “just another football game” and “not that big of a deal,” but there’d be no more fitting place for the second-year back to increase his workload.

After totaling 213 rushing yards in his previous two appearances last October, he had broken a 62-yard touchdown run in the first quarter against the Broncos before suffering the right ACL tear before halftime.

Offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker also went down with a season-ending triceps injury in what turned out to be a costly 16-9 victory.

The Jets improved to 5-2 before losing eight of their final 10 games.

“I’m still not even a year removed from my injury, and only 9-10 months from surgery, but I’m honestly just blessed to be back on the field and able to play good football again like I haven’t lost a step,” Hall said.

“Breece is in a great mindset,” Saleh said. “Everyone loves him. He’s been working hard. I will say this, he ran violently last week in practice, and I felt like it carried over in the game [against the Chiefs].

“You can tell he’s starting to get his Legs Underneath him. Even though he’s had production, he still hasn’t reached what we know he’s capable of and what he’s shown in the past. But he is trending in the right direction.”

Saleh said something similar about veteran running back Dalvin Cook, who also hasn’t gotten untracked as a Jet.

The four-time Pro Bowler was signed during training camp (Aug. 10), but he has totaled just 74 rushing yards on 30 carries through four games.

But this could be a breakout week for the running game — and a chance to take some of the focus away from quarterback Zach Wilson — against a Broncos defense that has allowed the most rushing yards in the league this season at 176.0 per game.

“Dalvin, he’s coming along. Remember he didn’t have OTA’s, he didn’t have training camp. He’s still getting his legs underneath him,” Saleh said. “I’ll speak for him, I’m sure he wants more. I’m sure he wants more production. He needs to continue to work.

“He’s getting faster, his GPS numbers are starting to get a lot faster. It looks like he is getting his legs underneath himself, too. We just need to find those guys a little bit more opportunity.”
