The meaning behind Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos’ viral celebration during wild-card win

No, Nick Castellanos did not flip off his teammates Tuesday night.

Nor did he hit a homer during an announcer apology, but that’s for another day.

Instead, Castellanos was actually showcasing his right ring finger to his teammates while standing on second base after lacing a double during the Phillies’ 4-1 win over the Marlins in Game 1 of their best-of-three wild-card series.

He wanted to let them know he wants that World Series ring.

“Of course, it was the ring finger, man,” Castellanos told NBC. “Why would I give the middle finger to my teammates? I love them.”

He added about the significance of the ring gesture: “That’s why we’re here, man. Red October.”

Castellanos had social media buzzing Tuesday night after his fourth-inning double that put two in scoring position with the Phillies ahead, 1-0.

A quick look made it seem as if Castellanos actually flipped off his teammates, which would be an odd celebration, but teams have their odd quirks.

The ESPN tweet of the double even blurred out Castellanos’ hand.

“I just found myself doing it,” Castellanos said after the game, as shown by NBC. “After that, I was like ‘Did I really just do that?’ It just came out.”

His teammates had a laugh about the situation.

“Someone goes, ‘Did he flip us off?’ and I’m like, ‘What?'” Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber said, per NBC. “I went back and watched the video and counted the fingers and was like, ‘OK, it’s his ring finger.’

“We were all like, ‘What is that?’ And he was like, ‘I have no clue. That’s the only thing that came out of my mind.”

While that would be a funnier story, Castellanos’ explanation makes sense for a Phillies team looking to win it all after falling just short last year.

The Phillies went to the World Series as the NL’s No. 6 seed last year, downing the top-seeded Braves and Padres in the process.

They then lost to the Astros in six games.

Philadelphia is a wild-card team again this year, although as the No. 4 seed, and is looking to make another deep run.

Tuesday’s win featured ex-Met Zack Wheeler throwing 6 ⅔ innings of one-run ball, and Castellanos went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

He provided a critical insurance run with an RBI double in the eighth that gave the Phillies their three-run lead.

Philadelphia will try to close out the series Wednesday when Aaron Nola faces Braxton Garrett at Citizens Bank Park, with first pitch set for 8:08 p.m. ET.
