UConn could use a jolt on the offensive side of the football, and in doing so, the Huskies turned to one of their big defensive players.

The 0-4 Huskies came into Saturday against Utah State with the eighth-worst team offense in college football (286.3 yards per game) but got an unexpected jolt from 303-pound defensive Tackle Jelani Stafford, who scored a touchdown and even made a big first down catch.

With the game scoreless in the middle of the first quarter, UConn first turned to Stafford on a third-and-2 at the Utah State 22 when they gave him the rock, which he ran for a solid four yards.

But that wasn’t his only contribution on the drive.

Five plays later with a second-and-goal chance, Stafford got the ball again and pounded it past the Aggies’ defense for a rushing score and put the Huskies on the board first.

And midway through the second quarter, Stafford again found himself in the middle of the offense, but this time in the passing game.

On a third-and-1 at the Utah State 33, UConn set up in a heavy package and appeared as if it was going for a run.

But quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson faked the handoff on a play-action and found Stafford in the flat for a 10-yard gain.

The play set up another UConn score, this time a 37-yard field goal from Elliott Nimrod.

On the defensive side, he also recorded a tackle.

It’s not the first time the big man has gotten the ball on offense, as he got two rushing attempts as a freshman with Youngstown State, though he did not score and picked up just one yard between the two attempts.

Saturday’s tackle, touchdown and reception might be a new version of a hat trick that the Huskies will gladly take.
