Xavier Gipson talks game-winning punt return, childhood and Jets teammates

The Jets’ Week 1 hero, 5-foot-9 rookie Xavier Gipson, catches up with Post columnist Steve Serby for some Q&A.

Q: Have you had a crazier week than this?

A: I have not, man (smile). It’s been crazy. It’s been amazing, it’s been an amazing week.

Q: What’s the craziest thing that has happened this week?

A: The followers, like on Instagram, it was crazy. But the most crazy thing I’ll say it was Tim Brown shouted me out, ’cause I went to the same high school as him.

Q: How many times have you watched the replay of your overtime punt-return touchdown?

A: Man, a lot of people been sending it to me. I’ve seen it like … I don’t know, man, I can’t even count (laugh).

Q: When you watched the replay, what amazed you the most about it?

A: The blocks. They set it up so nice.

Q: What’s it like being a fan favorite?

A: I’m a fan favorite?

Q: I think you are.

A: (Laugh) It feels amazing, man. Especially, it was electric, too. It was amazing.

Q: Are you recognized?

A: I really don’t be outside. I leave here, go to the crib, might go get some food, drive-thru or something. I haven’t been out like that yet.

Q: Have you gotten to New York City?

A: I’ve been one time before the season.

Q: Was that your first time?

A: Yeah (laugh).

Q: What did you think of it?

A: It’s different (laugh). I’m from the city, too. I’m from Dallas, but it’s nothing like New York City.

Q: You wrote in your high school yearbook: “People always told me that I was too small to play football, and I want to be able to show them that they were wrong and that you’re never too big or too small to do what you put your mind to.”

A: In the apartments where I played at, I was a small kid. I go to the neighborhood to play football, I was a small kid. But I always was the fastest and I had a different type of heart. Like I was like looking at older kids like, “Man, I’m not scared, man, let’s go play ball,” you know what I’m saying? I was taught, the bigger they are the harder they fall.

Q: Did it anger you that people always said you were too small?

A: It used to always anger me. It put a chip on my shoulder. But now it’s like, “All right, when I get my shot, I’m gonna show why the size really doesn’t matter.”

Q: What was your mentality coming to training camp as an undrafted rookie free agent?

A: Same thing. It was a different type of small, coming from a small school [Stephen F. Austin], so I knew I had to go a little bit harder. Before I even got here, I trained harder. So when I got here, I was gonna train hard but I make it feel like it’s easy. But it wasn’t easy (laugh). I just put my head down, stay focused, don’t worry about anyone else or what they got going on, just know I come in to handle business.

Q: When you were a kid, did you dream about an NFL career?

A: Yeah, all the time.

Q: What are you doing in the dream?

A: In the draft, walk across the stage.

Q: And then hug the commissioner?

A: Nah, I didn’t hug the commissioner, but I walked across the stage, had my jersey and then I woke up. And I was like, “Man, that dream was fake!” So I woke up, went in the backyard, and worked out. My dad’ll tell you I be working out since I was 7 in the backyard ’cause of those dreams (laugh).

Q: Another quote from you: “The majority of the battles you face are against yourself. If you can overcome yourself, you can defeat anything.”

A: Most people will quit on themselves. When things get hard, when things get tough, they want to find the easiest way out they’re comfortable with. But once you get over that hump, that uncomfortableness, then it starts getting comfortable, no matter where you’re at. I remember one time I ran 10 gassers, I said, “I’m gonna run one more every day.” And that was in the summertime. So I ran one extra one, just so I know I’m not defeating myself, I’m not cheating myself. Then it turned from 10 to 15, then the 15 turned to 20. And I was like, “Man I’m in the best shape of my life.”

Q: On Feb. 19, 2019, you tweeted: “Y’all slept on me, remember that.” Then three years later: “O still ain’t forgot.”

A: I still haven’t forgot. It was only like three teams, four teams that really believed in me that gave me a scholarship — SMU, Alabama A&M, McNeese State, SFA [Stephen F. Austin]. And UTSA wanted to, but they didn’t. I shook a lot of hands, and they were like, “Yeah, you’re too small,” this and that. So I just took it on my shoulder, as a chip.

Q: How rough was the neighborhood you grew up in?

A: It was pretty rough. On my mom’s side, for sure it was rough. On my dad’s side, it was rough in certain areas. You Gotta be in certain places. I picked the right spots. That’s where I moved to.

Q: Give me an example of how rough it was on your mom’s side.

A: What’s rough to you? What’s a rough neighborhood to you?

Q: Bullets flying … that’s a good place to start.

A: Yup, that’s one of ’em.

Q: Drugs …

A: All that (laugh). But it’s amazing people over there also.

Q: How old were you when you went to your dad?

A: I was like 8.

Q: What was the worst thing you saw?

A: Growing up? I can’t even speak on that, man. I can tell you the best thing I saw.

Q: OK, what’s the best thing?

A: I seen one of my close friends, he didn’t have a lot. He was struggling himself. I seen him take off his jacket and give it to a person who was homeless. And went in the store and bought him some food. And that motivates me, be like, “Man, it’s some good people in this world.”

Q: How old were you?

A: I was 9.

Q: A friend of yours, you said?

A: Yeah, he’s dead now.

Q: Did you lose a bunch of friends?

A: Yeah, I lost a couple of friends.

Q: What did it teach you?

A: Man, life’s short. You gotta enjoy it while you’re here. I’m grateful to be in my situation, ’cause what I have may not be a lot, but what someone else got it’s a lot to them. What I got is a lot to them.

Q: Your high school coach, Bobby Estes, used to drive you to school?

A: I moved back with my mom, and she used to have to go to work early in the morning and she got off late at night. He picked me up every morning. I didn’t miss a day. I used to get there earlier than everyone.

Q: You moved back with your mom in your junior year. Why?

A: I didn’t understand why I moved with my dad at first. Now I understand why I moved with my dad. It was more discipline. A woman can raise you, but you need a man around to become a man, you know? He introduced me to football.

Q: You have two children?

A: My son [Omarion], 2, my daughter [Malani], 1.

Q: What’s fatherhood like?

A: (Laugh) At first, it was stressful, I ain’t gonna lie, ’cause I had to balance school, with football and with my son. It’s a different lifestyle now, it’s not all about me now. My daughter, she’s my world. She always has a smile on her face no matter what. My son also, they both have smiles on their face no matter what. And it’s like … it’s bigger than me now, you know?

Q: Were you a Cowboys fan?

A: I’m from Dallas! Yeah. Yeah. I’m a Cowboys fan. But now I’m a Jets fan.

Q: Who were your favorite players?

A: Dez Bryant was my favorite player. He used to throw up an X, so I thought he was throwing to me (laugh).

Q: What will it be like going into Jerry Jones’ stadium as a New York Jet?

A: It don’t matter where you’re at, you still gotta play football. I know it’s gonna be loud, I know it’s gonna be kind of wild, and I know how the fans are gonna be. They’re gonna be talkin’, they’re gonna be trying to get in your head, they’re gonna be all type of things, but we just gotta go in there handle our business, play ball.

Q: Would you buy a ticket to watch Xavier Gipson play football?

A: If I was someone else, and I seen myself and they knew how hard I worked to get here, most definitely (laugh). Most definitely.

Q: What is it about the way you play the game?

A: I wouldn’t even do it for me, I’d do it for the team. But I feel like I’m electric. I’m a good teammate. I’m an entertainer a little bit (laugh).

Q: Describe your on-field mentality.

A: I’m a different person on the field, ’cause like this is my sanctuary. This is where I can release all my anger, my frustration. … This is my home away from home. … It’s a physical game, you can be physical for free, and not get in trouble (laugh).

Q: What drives you?

A: See how my mom never quit, see how hard life got, she never gave up. She’s someone that you could say is a fighter. Knowing my kids, I can make sure they have a great life also.

Q: You have to be fearless to be a punt returner, don’t you?

A: You have to be fearless, you have to. People are coming at you fullspeed and the ball’s in the air and you gotta look down, look up, you gotta trust yourself, you gotta have confidence also. And you gotta have discipline.

Q: You gotta be a little crazy too, don’t you?

A: Nah, you ain’t gotta be crazy (laugh). I think anybody that plays football is crazy (laugh).

Q: You think anybody that plays football is crazy?

A: Yeah, in their own way. But like, they’re also geniuses.

Q: What do you mean?

A: It’s a different type of game. It’s a game of inches, it’s a game of mindset — you gotta be focused, you gotta watch film, know plays, and you gotta be able to react to another person.

Q: Did you enjoy “Hard Knocks”?

A: I did. I did. That was cool. That was cool.

Q: What is amazing about Garrett Wilson?

A: He’s just awesome as a person.

Q: What makes him awesome as a receiver?

A: What doesn’t make him awesome? This guy got everything — route running, shiftiness, he can catch everything.

Q: Randall Cobb?

A: A leader.

Q: Sauce Gardner?

A: That’s my guy. He’s chill, laid back.

Q: Aaron Rodgers?

A: You can name anything that’s positive.

Q: Does anyone remind you of you?

A: If I had to say somebody like me, I’ll say like DeSean Jackson.

Q: Have you ever been chased down from behind?

A: I have. I broke a kickoff return, and I got comfortable right on the 20-yard mark. It was in high school. My second game of my junior year. He jumped on my back and my knee got hyperextended.

Q: Three dinner guests?

A: My mom, my dad, C.J. Wilson, my high school coach, corner coach.

Q: Do you miss corner?

A: Sometimes.

Q: Do you think you could have made the NFL as a corner?

A: I think more a nickel.

Q: Favorite movie?

A: “Remember the Titans.”

Q: Favorite actor?

A: Kevin Hart.

Q: Favorite singer/rapper/entertainer?

A: Lil Baby.

Q: Favorite meal?

A: Chicken alfredo.

Q: Personal goals this season?

A: I don’t like talking about my personal goals. I like to keep that to myself. Not saying you got bad energy, but I don’t like energy interfering with my goals. …I want it to happen, ***** then ***** we can talk about it.
