More receipts for Deion Sanders after apparent dig by Colorado State coach Jay Norvell

Jay Norvell has poked the bear and he doesn’t care about any collateral damage.

The Colorado State head football coach took an apparent shot at Colorado head coach Deion Sanders ahead of their showdown Saturday.

Norvell, on his weekly coach’s show, didn’t sound happy with Sanders’ lack of professionalism at press conferences, according to USA Today.

“I sat down with ESPN (this week), and I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder. I told them, ‘I took my hat off, and I took my glasses off,'” Norvell said. “And I said, ‘When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat and my glasses off.’ That’s what my mother taught me.”

Norvell said he won’t regret those comments, even if they are used by Sanders to fuel his No. 18 Buffaloes going into this weekend’s game.

In leading Colorado to back-to-back wins to open the season, Sanders and his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, have been quite vocal about those who dare to challenge or criticize the team.

After upsetting No. 17 TCU, 45-42, to open the season, Deion Sanders targeted ESPN’s Ed Werder in the postgame press conference, saying: “I read through that bull-junk you wrote. I read through that. I sifted through all that.”

When Werder, who never wrote anything critical of Sanders or his football program, didn’t answer, the Pro Football Hall of Famer responded with: “You don’t believe. You just answered it. You don’t believe. Next question.”

“Do you believe now? I read through that bull junk you wrote.”

Sanders also said while exiting the press conference that he will “keep receipts,” according to a video from Yahoo Sports, and he mentioned receipts at least two other times during postgame interviews.

Two days after upsetting TCU, Sanders then explained that Shedeur, who lit up the Horned Frogs for 510 yards and four touchdowns, had a chip on his shoulder going into the game.

“The reason he was so intense and relaxed and ready — not only did he study, but we went to the camp of a certain school, and a certain coordinator we just played against, he’s the offensive coordinator, he was at that school, and we went to that school’s camp, and he didn’t pay [Shedeur] no attention,” the elder Sanders said.

“I don’t even think he barely spoke to him. He just pushed him off to the side.”

Before Colorado’s Week 2 dissection of Nebraska, Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule ended up on the Sanders family hit list for a pregame meeting on Colorado’s team logo.

After tearing apart Nebraska, 36-14, Shedeur, who threw for 393 yards and two touchdowns, explained his motivation for the game.

“It was extremely personal, you go out there and warm up and you’ve got the head coach from the other team standing in the middle of the Buff,” Shedeur said. “It’s OK if a couple of players do it, it’s fine, just enjoy the scenery. But when you’ve got the whole team trying to disrespect it, I’m not going for that at all. I went in there and disrupted it.

“The Buffaloes mean a lot to me — personally — and that’s what I was saying in pregame. And that’s when I knew it was extreme disrespect. The coach said a lot of things about my pops, about the program. I don’t respect that because you’re hating on another man. … All respect was gone for them and their program.”

The last part about “my pops” and “the program” was a reference to Rhule’s offseason comment appearing to shade Deion’s use of the transfer portal, which Colorado used liberally to rebuild this year after a 1-11 finish in 2022.

So given that history, why did Norvell give Sanders more bulletin board material?

“They’re not gonna like us, no matter what we say or do,” Norvell said. “It doesn’t matter. OK, so let’s go up there and play. That’s just how I feel about it. I don’t mean to take over the show. I’m just tired of it. I mean, I’m tired of all that stuff. And I know everybody else is too. So, let’s go play.”

That could come back to haunt Norvell with Colorado State — which got trounced 50-24 by Washington State in its opener — a 23.5-point underdog Saturday, per BetMGM.
