News24 | WATCH | The general strikes back: Police say security guard resisted arrest, insulted General Kekana, leading to scuffle

  • West Rand district commissioner Major General Fred Kekana was caught on video in a scuffle with a man outside an estate in Westonaria on Monday.
  • The SA Police Service says the man insulted Kekana and resisted arrest.
  • Two people were arrested and appeared in court.

Gauteng police have offered an explanation of an incident where a top cop was caught on video in a scuffle with a man in Westonaria earlier this week.

Major-General Fred Kekana, who is the West Rand District Commissioner, came under fire after a video emerged of him allegedly assaulting a man outside a boomed estate.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said Kekana had visited another police Officer at the estate on Monday when a security officer denied him entrance through a "makeshift boom gate".

The security officer allegedly insulted Kekana, who was dressed in full uniform, resulting in an altercation.

"The security officer was not cooperating with officers. It was later established that the person was not a qualified security officer," Nevhuhulwi said.

In a video shared on social media, two police officers are seen wrestling with the unidentified man. One officer is seen trying to put handcuffs on the man while Kekana holds him down.

The man is in private clothing, not a security uniform. After a struggle, Kekana and the second officer wrestle him to the ground.

Kekana can be heard telling the man:

You break this thing, boy; it is an additional charge.

Nevhuhulwi said two suspects were arrested following the incident. They were charged with attempted robbery, assault, malicious damage to property and crimen injuria.

"Both suspects are alleged to be security officers. The robbery emanates from one of them grabbing the firearm of the officer and they reportedly hurled insults at the officers," Nevhuhulwi said.

She confirmed that the two men appeared in the Westonaria Magistrate's Court on Thursday and were released on R1 000 bail each.

The case was postponed to 29 September.
