Tropical Storm Lee forecast to become ‘extremely dangerous’ hurricane near the Caribbean

A newly formed tropical Storm is expected to evolve into an “extremely dangerous” hurricane as it barrels toward the Caribbean — potentially impacting cruise lines headed toward the islands.

Tropical Storm Lee formed in the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday, but is predicted to strengthen into a major hurricane by the end of the weekend.

“It will be a very strong storm very quickly,” Fox Weather meteorologist Cody Braud told The Post.

As of late Tuesday, the storm was located some 1,315 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. It had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was moving west-northwest at 16 mph.

The National Hurricane Center issued a stark warning that Lee is “expected to rapidly intensify into an extremely dangerous hurricane by the weekend.”

Though Lee is not expected to make landfall, forecasters are putting residents of the Leeward Islands on alert as the storm moves toward the area.

The outer bands of the storm might bring strong gusts, heavy rain, dangerous surf and extremely large waves, according to Braud.

Because Lee is expected to only hug the Caribbean islands and stay in the open waters, cruise lines might feel more of the impact.

“That’s something that we’re monitoring quite closely, just because you would not want to get anywhere close to a system this strong and, eventually, it’s going to be a very large system as well,” Braud said.

“That’s going to be something that cruise lines are actively monitoring.”

Lee is expected to slow down before reaching the US, but it is too early to tell whether its path will change.

Meteorologists are putting East Coasters on alert in the off-chance major developments arise in the coming days.

“We can never rule out anything with hurricanes … Any kind of swings, say to the south further west could end up having major impacts down the line,” said Braud.

Tropical Lee is the twelfth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season and comes just a week after Hurricane Idalia walloped Haiti and parts of the Florida Panhandle.

Idalia, the largest hurricane to hit Florida’s Big Bend area in more than a century, packed fierce 125 mph winds and a monster storm surge that left at least 500,000 residents without power and blasted a trail of damage more than 100 miles wide.

Communities like Cedar Key, an island town about 90 miles southwest of Live Oak, bore the brunt of Idalia’s fury.
