There’s something inherently cool about these dark-type pokémon that always manages to capture my attention. So without further ado, let’s dive into the best Dark-Type Pokemon of all time!

Umbreon

Starting the list strong, we have Umbreon. Additionally, Umbreon will be the only pure Dark-Type Pokemon in this list. This Eeveelution has been a fan favorite ever since its introduction in Pokemon Gold and Silver and for good reason. With its sleek black fur and glowing yellow rings, Umbreon looks both mysterious and elegant.

But looks aren’t everything. Umbreon boasts impressive defensive stats, making it a great choice for a tanky Pokemon. Umbreon excels at stalling and can annoy its opponents to oblivion

With access to moves like Toxic and Wish, it can be a nightmare to take down. Additionally, its ability, Synchronize, means that any status conditions inflicted on it will also affect its opponent. Talk about turning the tables!

Moveset: Wish, Toxic, Moonlight, Foul Play

Species: Moonlight Pokemon

Pokedex Entry: “When this Pokemon becomes angry, its pores secrete a poisonous sweat, which it sprays at its opponent’s eyes.”

Stat Totals: HP 95 / ATK 65 / DEF 110 / SPATK 60 / SPDEF 130 / SPD 65

Tyranitar

Next up is the monstrous Tyranitar. This behemoth of a Pokemon looks like it could take down an entire city if it wanted to. And with its incredible stats, it probably could. The Pseudo Legendary of Generation 2 lives up to its title.

Tyranitar’s high Attack and Defense stats make it a formidable opponent in battle. And with access to moves like Earthquake and Stone Edge, it can dish out some serious damage. Plus, its ability Sand Stream creates a sandstorm upon entering the battle, which can wear down the opponent’s team.

The only knock against Tyranitar is its weakness to Ground types and a 4x weakness to Fighting. However, its Rock/Dark Typing also benefits Tyranitar with a lot of S.T.A.B. (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves.

Moveset: Earthquake, Stone Edge, Crunch, Dragon Dance

Species: Armor Pokemon

Pokedex Entry: “Its body can’t be harmed by any sort of attack, so it is very eager to make challenges against enemies.”

Stat Totals: HP 100 / ATK 134 / DEF 110 / SPATK 95 / SPDEF 100 / SPD 61

Greninja

Coming in at number three is the speedy and agile Greninja. This ninja-like Pokemon made waves when it first appeared in Pokemon X and Y, and it’s easy to see why. Greninja’s unique typing of Water/Dark gives it an advantage against a variety of opponents.

And with its ability Protean, it can change its type to match the move it’s using. Protean makes Greninja a versatile and unpredictable foe. As a bonus, Protean makes every attack Greninja makes have the Same-Type Attack Bonus.

With its deep move pool and high ATK and SP ATK stats, Greninja is a veritable sweeper. Its high-Speed stat also allows it to outpace many other Pokemon in battle.

Moveset: Water Shuriken, dark pulse, Ice Beam, U-turn

Species: Ninja Pokemon

Pokedex Entry: “It appears and vanishes with a ninja’s grace. It toys with its enemies using swift movements, while slicing them with throwing stars of sharpest water.”

Stat Totals: HP 72 / ATK 95 / DEF 67 / SPATK 103 / SPDEF 71 / SPD 122

Incineroar

This fiery feline first appeared in Pokemon Sun and Moon, and it’s quickly become a fan favorite. Incineroar’s unique typing of Fire/Dark type gives it a useful resistance to several types and a lot of coverage.

Incineroar is best used as a pivot to make use of its ability. Its ability, Intimidate, lowers the opponent’s Attack upon entering the battle. This made Incineroar a great choice for switching in against physical attackers.

Add into that the move Parting Shot, and you have a very annoying Pokemon in your team. Parting Shot lowers the opponent’s Attack and Special Attack by one stage each, then the user switches out of battle. With its high Attack stat and moves like Flare Blitz and Darkest Lariat, it can deal massive damage to opponents.

Moveset: Flare Blitz, Darkest Lariat, Knock Off, Parting Shot

Species: Heel Pokemon

Pokedex Entry: “Incineroar’s rough and aggressive behavior is its most notable trait, but the way it helps out small Pokémon shows that it has a kind side as well.”

Stat Totals: HP 95 / ATK 115 / DEF 90 / SPATK 80 / SPDEF 90 / SPD 60

Roaring Moon

Roaring Moon is the Paradox form of the Pseudo Legendary, Salamence. As such, it has a reputation to live up to, and boy did it live up to it. Harboring a staggering stat total with a great typing of Dragon/Dark type, it’s as good as Salamence or maybe better.

This Paradox Pokemon is a ferocious sweeper who can lay waste on the enemy team. With high Attack stats and blistering Speed, it can easily take down most Pokemon with ease. Add into that its HP stat total of 105, and you have a sweeper with considerable bulk.

The best way to use Roaring Moon is with the classic Dragon Dance and Drought setup. Roaring Moon has the ability Protosynthesis, which increases its highest stat by one stage in harsh sunlight. With multiple moves taking advantage of its high Attack, it is up to you what coverage you need on your team.

Moveset: Dragon Claw, Dragon Dance, Crunch, Earthquake

Species: Paradox Pokemon

Pokedex Entry: “It is possible that this is the creature listed as Roaring Moon in an expedition journal that still holds many mysteries.”

Stat Totals: HP 105/ ATK 139/ Defense 71/ SPATK 55 / SPDEF 109 / SPD 119
