Audio interfaces also convert digital audio back into an analog signal when it plays your recording from you DAW back through your speakers or headphones.

As mentioned above, it is the job of your interface to convert the audio signal into a digital format for use in your DAW. Your interface does this by taking multiple samples of the analog signal each second. The more samples your interface takes, the better the audio resolution. The number of snapshots taken per second is called the sample rate. The sample rate is expressed in Kilohertz (kHz) The most common samples rates you will find in an interface are: 44.1, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 173kHz, and 196kHz.
