2 of the West End’s longest-running musicals have announced they are extending their runs up until 2025. Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera are 2 of London’s most popular musicals and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere soon!
Les Misérables Extends West End Run
Les Misérables is the longest-running musical in the West End, the longest-running musical in the world, and the second longest-running show in London. The show doesn’t look to be going anywhere soon and has just announced that it is extending into 2025.

Les Misérables has been a staple in London’s West End for nearly 40 years! The show first played in preview performances in the West End on 28 September 1985 and then formally opened on 8 October 1985 at the Barbican Centre. On 4 December 1985, the show transferred to the Palace Theatre and then again to the Queen’s Theatre on 3 April 2004. The production temporarily closed at the Queen’s Theatre on 13 July 2019 to allow for refurbishments and in the meantime continued as a staged concert at the Gielgud Theatre just next door. It played at the Gielgud for 4 months and then returned to the newly refurbished Queens Theatre now renamed to the Sondheim Theatre.
With an incredible ensemble cast, Les Misérables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his desire for redemption, released in 1815 after serving nineteen years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean decides to start a new life but a police inspector named Javert refuses to let him escape justice. Alongside this, a group of young idealists attempt to overthrow the government at a street barricade in Paris.
Les Misérables has been seen by over 130 million people worldwide in 53 countries and 22 languages. The unbelievable score includes songs such as ‘I Dreamed A Dream’, ‘On My Own’, ‘Master of the House’, ‘Bring Him Home’ and ‘One Day More’.
The current West End cast includes Peter Jöback as Jean Valjean, Stewart Clarke as Javert, Katie Hall as Fantine, Will Callan as Marius, Amena El-Kindy as Éponine, Lulu-Mae Pears as Cosette, Luke Kempner as Thénardier, Claire Machin as Madame Thénardier and Djavan van de Fliert as Enjolras. Milan van Waardenburg is set to take over the role of Jean Valjean from 11 March.

The Phantom of the Opera Extends in London
The West End’s most haunting love story has extended its run once again at London’s His Majesty’s Theatre.
The Phantom of the Opera is the 3rd longest running show on the West End behind Les Mis and The Moustrap and is the second longest-running musical in West End history. The show began previews at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 27 September 1986 and then officially opened on 9 October 1986. Originally the show was choreographed by Gillian Lynne and starred Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman as The Phantom and Christine. The show has been a huge hit in the West End for almost 40 years and we’re still counting!

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless musical has played to over 145 million people in 41 countires and 183 cities in 17 different languages.
The Phantom of the Opera has a musical score composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. The score includes iconic songs such as ‘The Music of the Night’, ‘All I Ask of You’, ‘Masquerade’, ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’ and of course the title song. The book for the musical is written by Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe and is based on the novel Le Fantôme de l’Opera by Gaston Leroux.
The current West End cast stars Jon Robyns as the Phantom with Lily Kerhoas as Christine Daaé, Joe Griffiths-Brown as Raoul, Kelly Glyptis as Carlotta Giudicell, Matt Harrop as Monsieur Firmin, Adam Linstead as Monsieur André, David Kristopher-Brown as Ubaldo Piangi, Francesca Ellis as Madame Giry and Maiya Hikasa as Meg Giry. Chumisa Dornford-May is set to join the cast as alternate Christine Daaé from 15 March 2024.
