Labour Party’s (LP) presidential election candidate, Peter Obi, has said he believed he could still get justice in court even after president-elect, Bola Tinubu, is sworn in on May 29.

Pre-trials at the Presidential Election Tribunal ended on Tuesday while trial proper have been slated to begin on Tuesday, May 30. Petitioners have three weeks to present their case as opposed to seven weeks they asked for beginning from May 30 to June 23.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Diran Onifade, in a phone interview with DailySun, Obi expressed confidence in the tribunal and cited multiple incidences where people were recalled after being sworn into office.

“Ngige was Governor of Anambra State for three years, when his election was found to be faulty, he was removed. Only of recent, Emeka Ihedioha in Imo was asked to vacate for Hope Uzodimma and on and on. So, it’s not a big deal. That’s not how system works. Even though some people think someone will use executive powers to curtail the court and all. There are separation of powers in our system.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday filed papers to launch his 2024 presidential campaign, teeing up 18 months of acrimony as he and Donald Trump lock horns in what is expected to be an attritional contest for the Republican nomination.

DeSantis was considered a rising Republican star, but has seen his prospects dented by months of relentless attacks from the former president, who has surged into a commanding lead despite being engulfed in criminal investigations.

The 44-year-old right-winger filed his documentation with the Federal Election Commission ahead of a livestreamed Twitter chat with the platform’s billionaire owner Elon Musk, when he expected to make his formal announcement.

Pro-DeSantis political organization Never Back Down released a video featuring a 2022 speech setting out his signature issue: the encroachment of political correctness in public life.

“We fight the woke in the schools, we fight the woke in the corporations, we will never ever surrender to the woke mob. We will be courageous and we will never back down,” he vows.

The Federal Government has decided to stop further deductions from the accounts of state governments over the Paris club debt.

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) Chairman, Governor Aminu Tambuwal, disclosed this in a communique after a meeting on Tuesday.

Tambuwal said another reason why the FGN agreed to stop deductions from State Governments’ accounts is “to meet Local Government Councils London/Paris Club obligations.”

He revealed that the minister of Finance, Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed also promised to ensure the refund of what had been deducted before now from the states government accounts.

Tambuwal said meeting also effected changes in the forum’s leadership with the Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq emerging as the new Chairman, with Oyo State’s Governor Seyi Makinde as Vice Chairman.

“Members were briefed by the Chairman of the forum that the Hon. Minister of Finance has granted the request of the forum to immediately stop further deductions from the accounts of States to meet Local Government Councils London Paris Club obligations and the monies so far deducted be paid back to the States.

“On the leadership of the forum, the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, emerged the new Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum through a consensus, and the Governor of Oyo State Seyi Makinde is now the Vice-Chairman.”
