ICPC arraigns man over alleged employment scam

Umar Abubakar has been charged by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) with crimes related to suspected forgery and employment fraud.

In Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, Abubakar appeared before Honorable Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman of Adamawa State High Court 1.

The Commission charged the defendant with receiving money under false pretenses from an unwitting job seeker with the promise that he would assist his victim in gaining work with ICPC in Charge No: HC/ADSY/127C/2022.

A letter of temporary appointment from the anti-graft Commission was fraudulently faked, signed, and given to the victim by the accused person in a 3-count accusation, despite the fact that the accused knew the document did not come from the Commission.

The defendant further requested payment in the amount of One Million Naira (N1,000,000) to allow him to carry out the nefarious activity, the court was informed.

His conduct is unlawful and punishable under Section 17(1)(a) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2000, Section 1 of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act of 2006, Section 349 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State of 2018, and Section 351 of the Penal Code Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

When the counts were read to the defendant, he entered a plea of not guilty to each one.

The ICPC lawyer, Mr. Anas Kolo, did not object when the defense attorney applied for bail application on behalf of his client; nonetheless, he urged the court to impose strict measures that would force the defendant to appear for his trial.

The trial judge then granted the accused individual bail in the amount of N200,000.00 and a surety in the same amount who must also reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case has been postponed until June 15, 2023, when the trial will start.
