Theatre News: The Picture of Dorian Gray, Stereophonic, Merrily We Roll Along, Lempicka and Suffs

Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama for “Succession”, Sarah Snook, next plans to make her Broadway debut next season. The show is a one-woman show of The Picture of Dorian Gray. The adaption of Oscar Wilde’s novel by Kip Williams, the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company. The show finishes in London May, but premiered back in 2020. Michael Cassel is producing.

Stereophonic the new play by David Adjmi will begin previews on April 3, 2024, ahead of an April 19 opening night at Broadway’s Golden Theatre. The play, which features music by Will Butler, is scheduled for a limited run through July 7th.

The play, directed by Daniel Aukin, played Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons.

Stereophonic  follows a mid-1970s rock group as they record their sophomore album, after their debut record was a surprise hit. A meditation on the joys and frustrations of creating art, the play entirely takes place in a recording studio as audiences watch the band members and their engineers strive for artistic perfection, battle inner demons and clash in their personal and professional relationships.

The is Adjmi’s and Butler’s Broadway debut. They are best known as a member of the band Arcade Fire, Butler received four 2019 Drama Desk Award nominations for his music, lyrics, book and performance in Ars Nova’s production of “Rags Parkland Sings the Songs of the Future.”

The entire cast of the Off-Broadway production will reprise their roles and include Will Brill as Reg, Andrew R. Butler as Charlie, Juliana Canfield as Holly, Eli Gelb as Grover, Tom Pecinka as Peter, Sarah Pidgeon as Diana and Chris Stack as Simon.

The critically acclaimed, first ever Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along is proud to announce the Rooftop Writers Initiative, in partnership with the Stephen Sondheim Foundation and American Theatre Wing’s Jonathan Larson Grant. The Rooftop WritersInitiative will select 100 young writers to receive two complimentary tickets to a special performance of Merrily We Roll Along on Thursday, February 29, 2024, followed by a talkback with the cast.

In honor of the Rooftop Writers Initiative, a percentage of proceeds from a special Merrily We Roll Along pen sold at the Hudson Theatre merchandise stands and online will be donated directly to the Stephen Sondheim Foundation and American Theatre Wing’s Jonathan Larson Grant.

Established after his passing, the Stephen Sondheim Foundation is the largest single beneficiary of future royalties from Sondheim’s work. It aims to aid emerging playwrights, composers, and lyricists working in the theatre during the early stages of their careers by assisting financially in the development and advancement of their careers.

At a special event at Sotheby’s today, the new principal cast of Lempicka, the sweeping new musical portrait celebrating the gripping true story of renowned artist Tamara de Lempicka, was announced. The principal cast will include Amber Iman as Rafaela, Andrew Samonsky as Tadeusz Lempicki, George Abud as Marinetti, Natalie Joy Johnson as Suzy Solidor, Zoe Glick as Kizette, Nathaniel Stampley as the Baron, and Beth Leavel as the Baroness. As previously announced, Eden Espinosa will be playing Tamara de Lempicka.

It was recently announced that Lempicka has an exclusive, on-going collaboration with Sotheby’s, the world’s premier destination for art and luxury, in celebration of the renowned artist and the Broadway-bound production.

Suffs. The new original musical will begin performances at the Music Box Theatre on March 26th with an opening night set for April 18th.

Suffs will star book writer, composer, and lyricist Shaina Taub in the role of Alice Paul, making her only the second woman in history to write the book, music, lyrics and star in her own Broadway musical. Taub is an Obie Award-winning, Emmy Award-nominated songwriter and winner of the Kleban Prize, the Fred Ebb Award, the Jonathan Larson Grant, and the NYCLU’s Michael Friedman Freedom Award for activism. She created and starred in acclaimed musical adaptations of Twelfth Night and As You Like It at Shakespeare in the Park, has released three solo albums, and is currently signed to Atlantic Records.

Suffs will also star Tony Award winner Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Tony Award Nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn.

Rounding out the company are Hawley Gould as the Alternate for Alice Paul, Jaygee Macapugay as Mollie Hay, and Laila Drew as Phyllis Terrell/Robin. The ensemble will feature Dana Costello as well as Jenna Bainbridge, Monica Tulia Ramirez, and Ada Westfall making their Broadway debuts. The cast will also include Christine Heesun Hwang, Kirsten Scott , Housso Semon , and D’Kaylah Unique Whitley.

Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai are two of the musical’s co-producers.

Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman is directing, choreography by Mayte Natalio, music supervision and music direction by Andrea Grody , scenic design by Tony Award nominee Riccardo Hernández, costume design by Tony Award winner Paul Tazewell , lighting design by Tony Award nominee Lap Chi Chu , sound design by Jason Crystal and orchestrations by Tony Award winner Michael Starobin.
