Last night I headed to The Town Hall, to hear the phenomenal Loreena Mckennitt. McKennitt came to prominence in 1991 when she released her fourth album, The Visit. The album was released through a partnership with the Warner Music Group worldwide. The Visit was an influential album not just because of the quality of the music but because it was an album of folk-based music being released on a major record label. She went on to sell more than 14 million albums and two Grammy award nominations and has perform countless tours around the world. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Visit, she has planned a national tour and NYC was one of her stops.

Performing with Ms. McKennitt were Brian Hughes on guitars and Bouzouki, Caroline Lavelle on cello, accordion, recorder and vocals, Hugh Marsh on violin and Dudley Phillips on double bass. Each of these musicians is at the top of their game and were sensational.

McKennitt’s masterful songwriting is combined with ethereal vocals etching out her passion for Celtic music and world music.

The first act included songs from various albums that put the audience in a mediative state of serenity.

The second act included every song on The Visit, (in the order which they appear on the album). We were treated to “Greensleeves,” which she originally recorded in 1989 on her third recording, “Elemental”, “Parallel Dreams”, “All Souls Night,” Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott,” and AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll),”

To sit through a Loreena McKennitt concert, is to be transported out of place and time. The mystic, deep, haunting musical journeys that her melodic twists and turns, take you on, is soulful and satisfying. You will leave floating on a musical cloud.
