Our weekly fix of the best new music as Julia Mason (aka The Decibel Decoder) brings us her review of new music with singles from Brògeal Witchy Emerald Eyes and FEAR OF MARKO Teeth

The Scottish five-piece Brògeal have released their new single Witchy Emerald Eyes, the third track from their forthcoming EP following Girl From NYC and Fly Away. 

The bands love of traditional Scottish and Irish folk Music is obvious from their songs, however they mix it with their own modern influences to create something very different in the current contemporary music scene. 

Witchy Emerald Eyes opens with an accordion then quickly heads into a rip-roaring foot-stomping track. The combined vocals of Aidan Callaghan and Daniel Harkins produce a glorious harmony. The jaunty vibe here continues throughout the track and you cannot help but smile while listening. That pause for breath towards the end is just playing with the listener, you know this song is not finished yet.  

Brògeal recently finished a run of support dates with The Mary Wallopers (also recently supported by our very own Nixer - Ed). Next they will be embarking on a tour of Ireland beginning on 26 April in Waterford followed by appearances at The Great Escape and TRNSMT as well as inclusion on the bill at The Wolfe Tones farewell show in Finsbury Park this summer. Then it’s a headline tour in September, their biggest to date.  I’ll see you down the front.

Track: Teeth

FEAR OF MARKO has released new single Teeth, which combines to stunning effect two of his strongest influences: nostalgia and futurism. There is a touch of Prince in the opening few chords but then Teeth quickly heads into electronic indie dance music blend with its infectious beats and bouncing vibe.  

The track explores themes of self destruction and megalomania and is a song for the outsiders and thrill seekers. The artist expands: "Teeth is a song I wrote when I was in a really chaotic place, I felt like I had no idea what I was going to do with my future and everything just felt pointless.  It felt like the perfect introduction to myself as an artist.  I think as an artist I usually steer towards the idea of escapism as someone who has never felt like they fit in anywhere.”

Emerging from the Manchester underground music scene, FEAR OF MARKO (aka Marcus Connolly) first surfaced online in 2018, sharing demos and short films online, soon developing a small cult like following. In 2019 after being offered a distribution deal from AWAL (a division of Sony Music Entertainment), he then went on to release two mixtapes online before landing on the stage name in 2022.   

Music has never been more difficult to put in boxes, which is to be applauded of course.  On Teeth FEAR OF MARKO combines influences from American grunge, electronic rock and emo – the result is a captivating track perfect for the dancefloor, full of fizz and energy.  Can’t wait to hear what’s next.
