Flying solo, the Fontaines frontman releases his debut single.

Fontaines D. C. frontman Grian Chatten is a busy fella. Along with his collabs with Leftfield and Kae Tempest; having the craic with Sleaford Mods; covering Nick Drake's Cello Song (with the band) for The Endless Coloured Ways: The Songs of Nick Drake; and FDC gearing up to support Arctic Monkeys on their North Amercian tour, he has found space and time to release his debut solo single The Score, out now on Partisan Records.

The folksy feel engendered by the acoustic guitar, albeit with low key electronic backing, sees the Dublin singer “shift his creative process from a collaborative endeavour to a solely introspective one”, according to the press release. He says: “The Score is a heavyweight bated breath of lust. I wrote it in Madrid between an electric fan and a dying plant and I intend to keep it there. It was inspired by sugar and sunset.”

It's unmistakably Grian singing yet it's a defiantly different space to that occupied by his band. It's simple but affecting: "You know the score, It ain’t limited to your knowing looks and touches anymore."

With solo releases, it's hard to disassociate a musician from their parent band and truly judge a track on its merits. We reckon this would be a winner from whoever.
