New releases from Alien Chicks and Vacations

They're decent, they're recent and we have reviews - and all you need to keep up to date with new music.

Artist: Alien Chicks

Track: Candlestick Maker

London trio Alien Chicks share their raucous new single Candlestick Maker, via Hideous Mink Records. It’s the second to be taken from their debut EP which is set for a summer release. Fast, furious, frenetic and with a captivating video - you are hooked and want to watch it all the way through. This is a full on assault on the senses with a post-punk sensibility and yet not afraid to do a handbrake turn during the song.

Lyrically the final verse is a standout. Thought-provoking they cut straight to the heart of the matter: be proud of your achievements.

“He said the only reason he was here

Was to guide me on my path to righteousness, well

Fuck me the arrogance of Christianity

That would mean that none of my achievements were me

Lucifer spreading lies of the anti-autonomy”

The band further explain:

Candlestick Maker is a live favourite - it always gets the mosh pit going at our gigs. It straddles a mix of different genres and is both playful and haunting, while also making you want to dance”.

There will be plenty of opportunities to mosh as Alien Chicks are currently on their debut headline tour. In addition there are a number of festival appearances including the Alternative Great Escape in Brighton in May.

Artist: Vacations

Track: Next Exit

Australian band Vacations share their new single, Next Exit, written while on their sold-out tour of the US in early 2022. A DIY affair from the get go, Vacations formed in 2016 primarily as a songwriting vehicle for Campbell Burns, later adding band members Jake Johnson, Nate Delizzotti, and Joseph Van Lier.  Together they have produced a gorgeous sparkling slice of indie pop.

Can music have a sprinkle of sunshine within it? Next Exit has a warmth to envelop you but at the same time is dancefloor friendly with its jangly guitars and the stunning vocal of Burns. I’ve had this on repeat, absorbing the vibe which simply oozes from the track. Any song that makes me smile is worth multiple listens.

Burns says of the new single: “Conceptually, it takes on the idea of being stuck in a loop of repetitive behaviour. Feeling stagnant and unsure of the future ahead. You could easily draw this to us as a band navigating COVID, or on a more personal level with relationships between friends or romantic partners. I always like the idea of multiple interpretations. You can have your own meaning, and I can have mine. Together, we still connect over the music.”
