Police Crack Down On Cricket Betting Menace In Twin Cities | Hubballi News – Times of India

Hubballi: As the World Cup ODI cricket tournament is getting more exciting by the day, Hubballi-Dharwad Police have started cracking down on cricket bookies.
They have been conducting raids continuously for the past few days. To date, police have unearthed several dens of bookies, registered over 16 cases and seized assets and cash to the tune of lakhs.
Before the World Cup, the Hubballi-Dharwad police commissionerate conducted various campaigns on social media to warn cricket bookies. Despite this, many continue with betting activities. The police are now taking stern action against them.
According to sources in Hubballi-Dharwad police, from October 12 till date, 16 cases of cricket betting were registered and 33 people have been arrested with seizing over Rs 4 lakh including mobile devices and others. All these developments have been reported only during the ongoing World Cup matches.
During the India-Pakistan match, 8 cases were registered, 19 people were arrested and Rs 53,650 recovered along with mobile devices and others in Hubballi-Dharwad twin cities. Most of the raids were conducted by the Hubballi-Dharwad CCB police. Including the raids during World Cup ODI in 2023, under Hubballi- Dharwad police commisionerate, a total of 97 cases have been reported, 184 have been accused and total cash and other properties worth Rs 12,82,810 were seized, sources added.
Commissioner of police Renuka Sukumar said: “We have formed special teams to curb cricket betting incidents in all police stations and CCB. The special team of CCB is led by an ACP and three police inspectors. “Strict instructions have been issued to all police stations to curb cricket betting cases, in this regard all police stations are working effectively,” she added.
Raids against cricket betting will be continued and stern action will be initiated against the people indulging illegal activities, she said.
Director general of police Alok Mohan said they have issued guidelines to all the officials across the state that there is no room for cricket betting and other unlawful activities.
Based on the seriousness of cases, officials will initiate stringent action against the accused. “All the officials at the district level will keep tab on cricket betting activities and initiate appropriate action,” he added.

Betting amounts ranged from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh per match, with approximately Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore wagered over nine matches. The betting software was purchased for Rs 25,000.
3 arrested for running cricket betting racket
Delhi Police has arrested three men in connection with a cricket betting racket operating in south Delhi. The men were found in possession of laptops, mobile phones, an LED TV, and other items used for betting. The police conducted the arrest as part of a special drive against betting during the ongoing Cricket World Cup. The men confessed to using betting assistant software and revealed that large sums of money were at stake in each match.
