Healdsburg in the news:

  1. Healdsburg has a new environmental bible of sorts to inform local policy in the coming years. It’s called the Climate Mobilization Strategy, and city leaders gave it their final stamp of approval on Monday “following several revisions to the plan that were proposed by the city staff after a year-long development calendar,” the Healdsburg Tribune reports. More from the story: “The revisions were, at least in part, due to the late circulation of an online petition that questioned the value of the city’s CMS initiative. The purpose in developing the strategy was in support of state and regional greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals. ‘The Strategy identifies key measures and actions that will be most impactful in reducing GHG emissions, are equitable, feasible, and community driven,’ according to the document presented at the meeting. As noted in its overview, ‘The City of Healdsburg is unique for a small city, operating its own electric, water, and wastewater systems… These unique community characteristics provide climate action opportunities that may not be possible in other communities.’ Andrew Sturmfels, the assistant city manager who oversaw the study, emphasized that maintaining community ‘smalltown values’ through the actions outlined in the CMS was an overriding goal in developing the strategy. Yet the CMS plan, as presented, remained complex and multilayered, with 93 action items in 18 different measures, covering a panoply of climate-related topics.” You can read more about the plan’s particulars in the Trib, or check out it out in full on the city’s website. 2. Six years after opening on the plaza between Mr. Moons and the bakery, local “juice and smoothie bar” The Nectary is closing its doors any day now, according to a sign posted on the window. And the original location in Sebastopol will also shut down. The official closing date for the Healdsburg shop is listed on the sign as Oct. 15, but it was still open when I stopped by yesterday; a young lady working the counter wasn’t sure when it’ll close for good. I’ve reached out to the owner, Gia Baiocchi, for a date — will keep you all posted. In a letter from Gia taped onto The Nectary’s window, she doesn’t say why, exactly, the juice shop is going out of business, but does write: “This was a very difficult decision for me to make, but the time has come for the doors of The Nectary to close… it has been one of life’s greatest gifts to steward this business and witness the positive impact it’s had in so many people’s lives.” She also writes: “It all started 10 years ago, as a dream to provide deep nourishment and healthy offerings in the form of FOOD and MEDICINE for our community… what The Nectary has blossomed and grown into since our fledgling years at the Barlow [in Sebastopol] is beyond my wildest dreams! It has truly been a blessing to tend to the health and well being of Sebastopol, Healdsburg and our greater Sonoma County community.” (The Nectary)

  3. The Healdsburg Fire Department just brought a new captain on board. “We are pleased to announce Captain Victor Andrade assumed the role of B shift Fire Captain at the Healdsburg Fire Department, on October 16, 2023,” city officials announced this week. “Originally from Mexico and moving to the United States at 10 years old, Victor has built a commendable career in the fire service. His journey includes volunteer service at Cloverdale Fire and a significant 16-year stint at CalFire, progressing through roles like Helitack Firefighter and Fire Apparatus Engineer, and eventually Fire Captain, with service across several units including Eel River and Konocti Conservation Camps, Sea Ranch, and most recently Healdsburg CalFire. Victor and his wife Olga, who also works in Healdsburg, reside in Santa Rosa with their two sons, Oliver (10) and Lucas (8). The City of Healdsburg is delighted to welcome them. Please join us in welcoming Captain Andrade and his family. We anticipate his leadership and rich experience will greatly benefit our fire department and the wider community.” (City of Healdsburg)

From my notebook:

  • As the Healdsburg High School football team wraps up their 2023 season, time is running out for a win — one of which they haven’t had in over two years. Our boys will play league rival Maria Carrillo at Rec Park tonight. “Loyal Healdsburg fans are hoping that coach Randy Parmeter’s work ethic and consequences culture will pay off with a late-season victory to prevent another winless season,” the Tribune reports. “Their best chance might be this Friday night.” (Healdsburg Tribune)
  • Meanwhile, on the cross country team, HHS siblings Kaeden and Sierra Anderson are reportedly crushing it. They “put up increasingly fast times over the last couple of weeks at their home course at Hoot Owl Vineyard in Alexander Valley,” writes the Trib. (Healdsburg Tribune)
  • And Healdsburg High golfer Tehya Mitchell just won the league championships in Petaluma, according to the Press Democrat! On Monday, she’ll reportedly head down to the Bay Area for the qualifying tournament for division championships, which are scheduled for Oct. 30. (Press Democrat; paywall)

Now you’re in the loop for the weekend. See you soon!
