60-year-old man from California killed in train derailment outside Pueblo, NTSB starts investigation

Pueblo, Colo. (KKTV) – 11 News is learning more about a Train Derailment on I-25 outside Pueblo.

This train derailment continues to shut down I-25 around Mile Marker 110 in both directions. This is causing long back-ups on all routes around the closure. Our crew on scene says it took them two and a half hours to arrive this afternoon. The traffic is backed up for at least four miles around the area.

The investigation into what caused dozens of cars to crash and spill coal all over the northbound lanes is just beginning. NTSB says the train was made up of five locomotives, carrying 124 cars of coal. This means at least a fourth of the train derailed.

Investigators with NTSB arrived at the scene around 1:00 p.m. Monday. NTSB tells 11 News they have four investigators on scene. Investigators are working to find the adequacy of track inspections, track maintenance, the bridge’s structure and issues with rail equipment. Investigators are working to find out how the trail derailed and what caused this accident. NTSB says a preliminary report should be ready in a month but a full report may take up to two years.

Later in the afternoon, the Pueblo County Coroner announced 60-year-old Lafollette Henderson, a semi driver from Compton, California died beneath the wreckage.

C-DOT tells 11 News they are expecting clean-up to take two days or more. 11 News will stay on top of this story and continue to update as we learn more.
