Saturday picks

Find the following picks for the races at Chepsto and Newmarket on Saturday.

Chepstow 2.30 – Threeunderthrufive each-way

The Paul Nicholls trained THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE had a little bit of a frustrating time of things last season, but if fully revved up for his seasonal reappearance then he could take some beating. The 8-year-old was far from disgraced in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival, and ran a good race on his final start of the campaign when finishing fourth in the Scottish Grand National.

Off 147 he could easily be getting in the mix here, given that he is a solid jumper, versatile in regards to underfoot requirements and has winning form at the course. So any rain falling shouldn’t be an issue, and given his excellent record when fresh, it would be no surprise if he was fired up for this after undergoing a recent wind-operation.

The superb Harry Cobden is in the saddle, and the combination look to have a rock-solid each-way claims in this encounter.

Newmarket 2.40 – Wordsworth each-way

The market revolves around Pied Piper, who as a 157-rated Hurdler could still have a lot more to offer on the level off 96, and should have no issues over trip or ground. He has been well nibbled at though in recent days, and so looks skinny enough in the market for a race of this nature.

There is no doubt he is a horse with a touch of class, but he doesn’t get me excited at his price. However, at much bigger odds I wouldn’t rule out a big run from David Pipe’s new recruit WORDSWORTH. The former Ballydoyle inmate, who was rated 111 at his peak, looks rejuvenated by current connections, which was evident on his hurdling debut for the yard. He won in a common canter at Bangor, not really having to go through the gears, and looking in rude health as he went about his business.

The 5-year-old is still relatively unexposed over staying trips on the Flat, and has always shaped as though the demands of this assignment would be tailor-made for him. Pipe has gone on record to say that this race “has been the plan all along” and so he will more than likely be primed to the minute for this. In my view there are a few others ahead of him in the market who have bigger question marks, and from an each-way angle I think the Pond House representative can get firmly in the shake-up here.

He looks versatile in regards to underfoot conditions and gets the nod from me with Christian Howarth helping offset his big weight by claiming 5lb.

Newmarket 3.15 – Arabian Crown

I am finding it hard to get away from the claims of ARABIAN CROWN, who looks all class, and can land the Group 3 Zetland Stakes. He powered home to win a Listed contest over 1m at Salisbury back in August when last seen. He looked in trouble a couple of furlongs from home, but he really went through the gears when asked and was doing his best work at the finish.

Naturally this step up to 10f looks as though it will suit perfectly. and it can unlock even more improvement as his stamina is drawn out. The potential for a deluge of rain shouldn’t be a problem for the colt who powered through the mud to win at Sandown on his penultimate start.

Everything looks in place for a big performance here from the Charlie Appleby representative with William Buick taking the ride on the son of Dubawi.

Newmarket 3.50 – Knight

This niche 9f trip, combined with some juice in the ground look exactly what is required for KNIGHT to regain the winning thread.

The 3-year-old has been consistent this term without winning, but he has acquitted himself well in some tough tasks this season, including when staying on well in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood on his penultimate start, only to be pipped inside the closing stages.

This step up to 9f look perfect for him, and I don’t think connections will be grumbling if the heavens do in fact bucket down. The Crisford team have had an excellent season, and have continued the good form as we continue in Autumn, operating at around a 22% strike-rate for October.

Top pilot James Doyle is on board the gelding, and a big run is on the cards.

Bet on Knight at William Hill

Chepstow 4.15 – Tronador each-way

Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy team up for a rare foray to the Welsh venue, as they are represented by the talented TRONADOR.

The 7-year-old has been bit of an enigmatic character throughout his career, but when on-song, has the ability to be playing a part in this off a BHA mark of 132.

He hasn’t quite lived up to the early potential he displayed, but after a spell in the hurdling doldrums he shaped with much more of his old zest when third at Bellewstown in July, and backed that up with a great run to be third in a hot handicap at Glorious Goodwood when back on the level.

This race could be tailor-made for him, and the Irish raider is the each-way angle here.

Sunday picks

Get ready for the races at Ffos Las with the following picks.

Ffos Las 2.10 – Wrappedupinmay

We may be in October, but I think this can go the way of WRAPPEDUPINMAY for the Paul Nicholls team.

The unexposed 5-year-old bolted up in a deep-ground bumper at Exeter back in January, then in a tougher race at Sandown on quicker ground he looked outpaced when finishing third. It was a bit of a tactical affair and probably didn’t play to his strengths – whereas this looks much more his bag.

Just shy of 2m6f on rain softened ground can see this son of Ocovango in a good light. The excellent Harry Cobden is in the saddle, and he can get off the mark at the first time of asking over obstacles where underfoot conditions should be much more his bag here.

Bet on Wrappedupinmay with Ladbrokes

Ffos Las 2.45 – Manorbank

Emma Lavelle has her string in fine fettle at present, and there is a lot to like about the claims of Chase debutante MANORBANK.

A winner of three of his five starts to date, this lightly-raced 8-year-old clearly hasn’t been the easiest to train, but has a lot of ability, as we saw at the end of last season, notching up back-to-back wins. The latter of those came at this venue on testing ground so he will be very happy in this scenario.

He looks versatile in regards to trip, and is open to any amount of improvement now going Chasing off a mark of 124. I think connections would be disappointed if he didn’t prove better than his current mark, and with such untapped potential it will be exciting to see how he gets on. Thomas Bellamy takes the ride on the gelding, and he should be right in the mix for this assignment.

Ffos Las 3.20 – Nemean Lion

Kerry Lee is a shrewd operator, and NEMEAN LION looks to have a great chance in a cracking renewal of the Welsh Champion Hurdle.

The 6-year-old may lack a bit of experience, but this former 90-rated Flat horse with Andre Fabre could easily prove well treated running here of 135.

The gelding was last seen winning a Grade 2 at Kelso at the back end of last season, and held his own in some very good company last season – including when third in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown.

In many ways, this foray into then Handicap ranks could see things pan out a little easier for the son of Golden Horn. Richard Patrick is in the saddle; a bold show is expected on seasonal bow.
