The feature race on the fifth and final day of what has been a drizzly yet exciting Glorious Goodwood will be the Stewards’ Cup, which may just be the most competitive race of the whole meeting.

The Coral Stewards’ Cup will take place at 3.00 and is something of a nightmare for both punters and commentators. Why? Well, 28 runners have been declared to run in this dash.

Our Betting Tips and Predictions for the Coral Stewards’ Cup

Ahead of this wide-open affair, that is worth no less than £128,850 to the winning connections, let’s see if we can pick out a few decent bets. Here goes:

Our Best Prediction: Apollo One (each-way) @ 14/1

Naturally, with 28-runners in this race, if you thought about it long enough, and tried hard enough, you really could make a case for well over half of this field, but that’s what’s so great about a race of this nature. The betting is hugely competitive, which presents the opportunity to find one at nice odds.

For me, there are two that I really like here and there’s not much between them. I have marginal preference for Apollo One, who arrives here off the back of a superb effort at Royal Ascot, where he finish second (of 27) in the Wokingham Stakes. There was plenty to like about that performance and I see little reason as to why he cannot back it up with another solid effort here.

In fact, he’s been very consistent this season, running with huge credit in three big-field events, finishing third, second and second. One those runs came on Soft Ground, which bodes well, while he’s won on very soft ground at Salisbury before, from a higher mark I might add. I think the mount of Richard Kingscote ticks lots of boxes here, so he’s definitely one I’ll be on each-way.

Our Each Way Prediction: Mum’s Tipple (each-way) @ 20/1

At slightly bigger odds, I really like the chances of Mum’s Tipple too, who’ll race in the hands of Frankie Dettori for trainer Richard Hannon. Hannon went close with one in a handicap yesterday, while his horses are generally running well at the minute, which is never a bad thing.

This horse also comes into the race off the back of a very promising effort in the Wokingham Stakes. The six-year-old stayed on well for fourth on that occasion after being caught a bit too far off the pace. He’s another that ought to appreciate a softer surface too. At the very least, he ought not to mind it having finished second close-up seconds in his last two runs on good-to-soft, while he’s finished second and third in his two runs on soft ground.

In addition, it’s worth noting that Dettori has one of the best jockey strike rates at Goodwood in this field, while he also has one of the best strike rates on soft ground. All in all, I think this runner is priced somewhat generously in the early betting and I’d be very surprised if he went off at 20/1, which simply looks too sizable, so he goes down as a clear value play as far as I’m concerned.
