‘In God We Trust’ is on at least one California license plate

Q. I recently saw a black California License Plate with white lettering and “In God We Trust” on the bottom side. It had the standard year and month stickers in the upper corners. Is this an authorized legal plate or could it have been illegally made?

– Eric Hall, Burbank

A. It is very likely a legal plate, called an RPlate, by the company that drivers in California can get them through, Reviver.

Powered by battery or the vehicle’s electrical system, such plates are white and matte black, with either color the background and the other used for the license-plate number.

One telltale sign of a Reviver plate is the colorful registration tag and the corresponding year sticker. Reviver plates don’t have them – that info is on the plate, but in white or black.

Eric didn’t catch if the plate he saw had a colorful tag – as a Honk reader, he is obviously a bright gent and was focused on the road.

But a phrase – Reviver calls it a “banner message” – can indeed be placed on a RPlate, and a Reviver rep told Honk that “In God We Trust” is one of hundreds of the company’s pre-approved ones. Looking at produced plates, others apparently include “Jedi Knight,” “Hunter Energy,” “Driving the Future” and “Live Well and Rebel.”

Personalized ones can be requested, with the Department of Motor Vehicles required to sign off on them.

Q. Honk, a few years ago my wife and I, along with other people who live nearby, attended a Caltrans meeting where we were told that plans were underway to make a dedicated on-ramp from southbound Lakeview Avenue straight to the 55 Freeway. To this day, nothing has happened. Is Caltrans still planning to build this ramp? As you probably know, now you must get on the 91 Freeway there and very quickly move over four lanes of traffic to make the 55, which is very dangerous and difficult.

–  Stan Zubas, Anaheim

A. You will get that ramp, Stan, but Honk is afraid more waiting is required.

Construction of the wide-ranging project, with improvements to the 91 from Lakewood Avenue to the 57, is to begin next summer or so and take three years.

Fortunately, the Lakewood interchange will be to one of the first upgrades.

“The Lakeview interchange is being completely reconfigured to improve access to the westbound 91 and to the southbound 55, and to eliminate the current merging and weaving through that area that causes congestion,” Eric Carpenter, a spokesman for the Orange County Transportation Authority, told Honk in an email.

New retaining walls, sound walls, sidewalks, lighting, signs and bike lanes will be coming to that area as well.
