PGA Charles Schwab Challenge 2023 Golf Odds, Picks And Props

The 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge drew eight of the top-20 golfers in the world rankings, and a pair of top Texans lead the field and odds to win at the leading online sportsbooks – world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (+400) and No. 11 Jordan Spieth (+1400). Those two Dallas residents and former University of Texas golfers lead no less than a dozen players in the field this week with Texas ties and popular betting options.

Scheffler, off his runner-up finish at last weeks PGA Championship, joins Spieth and Collin Morikawa as the golfers taking the most bets and money to win the Charles Schwab Challenge. Close behind is Viktor Hovland, who also finished runner-up last week at the PGA Championship.

The Charles Schwab Challenge invitational field has just 120 players, but many capable contenders and dark horses outside the top favorites. The tournament is hosted by Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth for the 78th consecutive year. The winner of the event on the 7,209 yard par 70 course earns $1.55 million of an $8.5 million purse.

The Charles Schwab Challenge is more than a golf tournament. The brokerage company made its debut as a title sponsor on the PGA Tour in 2019, and has been involved in the PGA Tour and Champions Tour for many years prior. Charles Schwab the company represents all that the PGA Tour is about in giving back to the community.

“We’ve been involved in professional golf mainly because it’s a game that our clients are involved with and aligns with the passions and interests that they share every single day,” Chief Marketing Officer Andy Gill said back in 2019.

With more than 360 offices and a newer, large campus in Westlake just North of Dallas and Fort Worth, Charles Schwab is a fixture in the Metroplex.

“It’s so important we invest back into communities in which we work,” said Gill.

Golf Picks and Spieth’s Dominance at Colonial

Spieth has been the tallest Texan when it comes to best finishes in the golf tournament at Colonial. He won in 2016, finished runner-up three times and has eight total top-10’s in the event including four in a row.

In his 40 rounds played at Colonial, Spieth has as dominant of a strokes gained stats profile as you will see a golfer have in an event. He ranks No. 1 in SG: Total, Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking, Short Game and Around-the-Green. He’s top-3 in Putting and Approach.

But there is still some concern with supporting Spieth when betting this week. The 29-year-old revealed today how he injured his wrist recently playing with his son. The 13-time PGA Tour winner and 3-time major champion finished T29 last week at the PGA Championship after withdrawing from the AT&T Byron Nelson the week prior.

“I don’t feel like I’m rushing things,” Spieth said of the injury that’s been diagnosed as a moderate grade tendon sheath tear. “I’m doing a lot of recovery stuff day to day that I’m not used to doing, but it’s been helping.”

Still, Spieth is a most popular pick to win this week by leading golf experts of PGA Tour and Golf Bet. Along with a CBS golf writer, 3-of-6 picked Spieth to win. The Golf Digest team of analysts have Collin Morikawa (3) as the top win contender along with Tommy Fleetwood, Sungjae Im, Cam Davis and Chris Kirk.

Fans will also get another look at 46-year-old PGA club pro Michael Block, who finished top-15 last week at the PGA Championship while making a hole-in-one playing alongside Rory McIlroy. Block received a sponsors exemption to play this week at Colonial, and the leading online sportsbooks are even offering some prop bets on Block this week.

What Spieth and Scheffler are Saying Ahead of 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge

Colonial Country Club is undergoing a huge renovation by Gil Hanse following this year’s tournament. Spieth saw Hanse’s initial plans from more than a year ago, and said it looks “really, really, cool.”

“It looks like it maintains the character of what Colonial is while creating some excitement on some holes that maybe could use a little bit of adjusting.”

Q: What is it about this course that fits your game?

JORDAN SPIETH: I really enjoy playing this place. It kind of requires — it’s really a course where anyone can win. You’ve seen bombers. You’ve seen shorter hitters, straighter hitters. It can yield anything, and you just have to hit a lot of shots.

Sometimes on the shorter holes, you’ve got to really position it at the right distance and the right section of the fairway. Then distance control is extremely important into the green.

So if you’re not in the fairways, it’s very difficult out of this Bermuda rough to get your distance control correct.

This week feels like a home game without maybe the extra that the Byron is for me. So I’m able to stay at home, but I also kind of feel — I feel the support without maybe the added-ness that I always kind of felt at the Byron. And it’s a course that’s fit my game really well over the years.

So really excited. Game’s been in a really good place this year, continuing on an upward trajectory as you mentioned.

Q. How does it feel to be the World’s No. 1 and back at your hometown course?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I don’t really think much about rankings and stuff like that. It’s nice being back here at home and being able to play an event. Like I said, majors typically wear me down pretty good, especially when you’re in contention on the weekend. I took Monday and Tuesday off, and was able to be at home and get some rest.

I grew up coming to this tournament. Being able to come here and play the golf course and compete is definitely very special for me. I’ve grown up dreaming of being out here, and now being on the other side where I’m inside the ropes and trying to do my best and compete is definitely very special.
