NFL world reacts to massive Bucs quarterback news

It’s set to be an all-out competition in Tampa, Florida, for the Bucs starting quarterback job. Especially if you take the team’s offensive coordinator’s words for it, because it doesn’t matter if you are Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask: A lot will be demanded of you.

Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Caneles set the record straight on the upcoming competition between Mayfield and Trask. Tampa Bay brought the former No. 1 pick Mayfield over in the off-season in free agency. The Bucs drafted Trask out of Florida and he sat behind the legendary Tom Brady in 2022. Caneles and the Bucs are hopeful that competition brings out the best in them because they are not jumping to naming a QB yet.

Caneles, via NFL.com, said to reporters, “Philosophically, for me, coming from Seattle, best guy gets the job. …For me, it’s a win-win when you create a competition.”

While Mayfield has been skewered for poor performances and Trask doesn’t have much of a rapport, that isn’t stopping Caneles from wanting the best out of his players. Tampa Bay will probably be grinding a lot out this season after numerous off-season departures. Brady and Leonard Fournette were among the departees. While the team still has Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, quarterback play could hamstring the team if Mayfield and Trask aren’t up to snuff.

But no matter where they land on the spectrum, you can expect a competitive off-season and training camp between the two quarterbacks.
