Five state parks were ranked among the “50 U.S. state parks everyone should visit in their lifetime” on Yelp.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

California has five of the top state parks in the nation for explorers, according to Yelp.

Yelp released the “50 U.S. state parks everyone should visit in their lifetime” on April 10, in time for summer traveling.

State parks in Santa Cruz, Los Osos, Felton, Borrego Springs and Big Sur made the list. These spots include ocean views, sandy beaches, blooming wildflowers and trails through old-growth redwood trees.

To find the best state parks in the U.S., Yelp identified businesses in the parks category that had a large number of views that mentioned “state parks.”

Then these parks were ranked on a few factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews.

Wilder Ranch State Park — Santa Cruz

At No. 4, Wilder Ranch State Park in Santa Cruz is a favorite among photographers, hikers or those just looking for a stroll in nature, according to Yelp reviewers.

The park has over 35 miles in trails to wander — some with ocean bluff views, hills and towering redwood trees.

“There are spectacular picture-perfect ocean vistas of massive cliffs carved by centuries of wave action,” one Yelp reviewer wrote about the Ohlone Bluff Trail.

This trail eventually leads to the Fern Grotto Beach, where hikers can try to catch a glimpse of sun-bathing seals, pelicans, dolphins and whales.

The park also has a historic dairy ranch with buildings from the 1800s that can be toured, including a Victorian home from 1897.

Montana de Oro State Park Los Osos

Montana de Oro State Park in Los Osos ranked No. 9 among the top state parks.

Parkgoers can take a “scenic walk along the coast,” or choose to wander the many other miles of “well-maintained paths,” Yelp reviewers said.

The park also has sandy beaches, like Spooner’s Cove that has rocky formations, tide pools and a campsite nearby.

“After setting up camp, walk on over to Spooner’s Cove and climb on the rocks and admire the view of serene waves splashing against the cliff,” another reviewer said.

Los Osos is about 15 miles west of San Luis Obispo.

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park — Felton

This state park in the Santa Cruz Mountains has 40 acres of old-growth redwoods, and it’s “absolutely stunning and breathtaking.”

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park was ranked No. 12 on the Yelp list.

It’s a great place for California travelers to spot massive redwood trees without having to drive as far north as Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

One of the largest trees in the redwood grove is about 277 feet tall and about 1,500 years old.

Visitors can wander through the grove, camp, hike, picnic or look for banana slugs.

“It’s easy to get lost in the forest, but it’s lovely being among the massive redwood trees and walking along the river,” one reviewer said.

Felton is about 30 miles south of San Jose.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park — Borrego Springs

This Borrego Springs spot ranked No. 22 among the best state parks, according to Yelp.

“With so many natural wonders, things to explore, to see and do, Anza-Barrego Desert State Park is a must visit if you are in the Southern California area!” one Yelp reviewer said.

The state park is known for its blooming wildflowers, rugged terrain and hiking trails filled with canyons, ridges and peaks.

“Spring is a great time to visit, when wild flowers may be in bloom, but winter and fall are beautiful, too, and often cooler,” another reviewer said.

Visitors can also enjoy the massive metal sculptures that dot the desert in Borrego Springs along the S-3 highway near the state park. A traveler might see an African elephant, a giant tortoise, a dragon, raptors or other dinosaurs.

There are 130 sculptures created by artist Ricardo Breceda.

“You can get a map from the rangers and pretty much off road to see (the sculptures). It felt like Jurassic park driving to each one,” one reviewer said.

Borrego Springs is about 85 miles northeast of San Diego.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park — Big Sur

A popular spot for beachgoers, hikers and campers in Big Sur also landed a spot on Yelp’s list of best state parks in the country.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park ranked No. 45. This park is in the Santa Lucia Mountains, near the coastline and above Big Sur River Gorge.

Big Sur River runs through the park, which allows campers to set up along the water. Travelers visiting for just the day can also wander along the riverbank among the redwoods, conifers and oak trees.

And there are plenty of trails for hiking, including one leading to a 60-foot waterfall called Pfeiffer Falls.

“Loved how being on these trails made me feel like I was so far away from the beach and into a whole other world,” one Yelp reviewer wrote.

But the ocean isn’t too far. Pfeiffer Beach is about a mile south from the state park’s entrance.
