Bonzi has been largely able to hold his level high after making the transition from challenger to ATP tennis. It was pretty decent this year too with a 10-7 record overall though he hasn’t played in almost two months because of an injury.

Bonzi is a good player with a very strong serve and powerful groundstrokes. His style is really risky but it works well for him as he doesn’t make that many mistakes considering the way he plays. Overall he’s pretty solid on clay and can win matches.

He had a 9-5 record last year which is far but it also shows that he doesn’t go out of his way to play on clay courts. It’s only the events he needs to play which makes this an interesting match for him. He’s coming off of an injury and some rust is expected, especially as he never played in Marrakech.

If he can serve well and hit his hosts, forehand especially, he’ll be a tough out. Varillas will probably have the upper hand in terms of form and rhyme but that only takes you so far.

Varillas In Good Form

Varillas played a really great week of tennis in San Remo before making his way to Marrakech. As of right now, he’s still in the draw playing in the final on Sunday. The good level before Marrakech is very good form him but fatigue could be an issue for him, especially if he goes against a player like Bonzi.

The crucial thing for him will be how fresh he will feel after playing on Sunday but if he keeps the match short he can certainly hope for a good result in Morrocco.

Varillas is a clay specialist as he plays his best tennis on that surface while also playing there most of the time. He went 47-24 last year and is 11-5 on it this year. The score overall is 13-8 so he has only two wins outside of clay this year.

Marrakech will be a decent opportunity for him but a lot will depend on how he feels after a long week in San Remo. There is an unwritten rule that players don’t play well after going to a final in the previous week.

This is an interesting spot for both players but I think backing Bonzi has some good value. Varillas is coming off of a long week and he might be in rough shape for this one.
