The Coffee chain plans to tap into Autogrill’s extensive service station expertise to open new motorway stores across Greece

Coffee Island is seeking to diversify its store portfolio with new outlets on Greece’s motorway network in partnership with Autogrill Hellas. 

 

Kickstarting the agreement, the coffee chain and travel concession operator opened a new store on the Akrata National Road between Athens and Patras in western Greece. 

Coffee Island, which operates more than 450 stores across Greece, is testing the format with a view to opening further locations at stop and rest sites across the southeast European country. 

Autogrill operates approximately 3,300 points of sale across 30 countries globally, including nine European markets. The Milan-based travel concession operator has been present in Greece since 2002, primarily operating units at motorway service stations. 

Although airport stores remain Autogrill’s largest sales contributor globally – generating 67% of Autogrill’s 2022 sales – only 16 of the 139 airports in which it operates are in Europe.  

In contrast, the travel concession operator manages 403 units at motorway service stations across Europe, alongside 188 units at railway stations, shopping centres and cultural attractions. 

Petra-based Coffee Island also has 46 stores in Cyprus, alongside sites in the UK, Romania, Switzerland, Canada and the UAE.
