Man takes own life, woman in custody after shooting and alleged car theft in Bannister in WA

A man has died from self-inflicted injuries and a woman was taken into custody following a string of incidents overnight in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region, involving a firearm and a stolen car.

Police allege the pair stopped a car along Albany Highway in Bannister, about 120 kilometres south-east of Perth, at around 5:20pm yesterday, at the scene where a red sedan had crashed.

It’s alleged the man fired a gun into the fully occupied vehicle, which sped off to escape.

Police said the armed offenders then allegedly stole a gold Volvo station wagon and fled the scene. 

Merredin residents, about 260km north-east of Perth in WA’s Wheatbelt, were ordered into lockdown at around 11pm on Saturday night after police spotted the vehicle at a petrol station.

A 24-year-old woman exited the vehicle and was arrested by police 45 minutes later.

The male driver was found unconscious with along the Great Eastern Highway in Merredin.

Police and paramedics tried to revive the man but he died at the scene.
