Horse racing tips: Huntingdon, Newcastle and Leicester – Tuesday October 17

There are five more meetings across the UK and Ireland on Tuesday, with a combination of National Hunt and Flat action.

They go jumping at Hereford (1.50-5.20pm) and Huntingdon (2.38-5.35), with Flat racing from Gowran Park (1.55-5.25), Leicester (2.15-5.45) and the all-weather meeting at Newcastle (4.20-8.30).

Tuesday’s nap showed plenty of ability in bumpers last season and looks like being a useful recruit to Nigel Twiston-Davies’ hurdling squad in the coming months.

Horse racing tips: Huntingdon 2.38

Nigel Twiston-Davies typically gets his team firing at this team of the year and he is living up to that billing with a stunning 41 per cent strike-rate from 27 runners over the past fortnight.

Two of those have come at Huntingdon and another success here could be pending, with hurdles debutant NORMAN FLETCHER in the two-mile novices’ hurdle that opens the card.

He looked a decent prospect in the early months of 2023, posting figures of 2181 in bumpers. He won at Southwell in January on good ground and obliged again in eye-catching fashion at Ludlow on good-to-soft terrain in late April. In between times he finished just better than midfield in a valuable contest at Newbury.

He returns now for his hurdles bow and gets a handy 7lb from Stuart Edmunds’ Eagle Of The Glen, a winner over timber at Hexham in the spring. Sam Twiston-Davies rides for his father here and a winning introduction over sticks is very likely for Norman Fletcher.

Horse racing tips: Newcastle 4.55

The All-Weather Championship kicks off on Tuesday evening and Daniel Muscutt heads to Newcastle for two rides as he starts his jockeys’ title defence on the synthetics.

The second of those is HAUNTED DREAM for the Ed Dunlop team in this handicap over an extended mile and a half. The Oasis Dream gelding was last spotted on the all-weather winning at Chelmsford in April over 1m 2f, taking his record in this sphere to four wins, a second and a third from six starts.

After coming up shy in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, there were excellent efforts in defeat at Sandown, York and Goodwood over the summer, while last time out he was far from disgraced finishing eighth of 34 in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket off a mark of 102.

He is 1lb lower back on the all-weather now and could still have more to give in this sphere given that he has remained on an upward curve over the summer despite a winless six-race sequence.

Horse racing tips: Leicester 5.10

It has been a little bit of a quiet spell for trainer Ed Bethell, but he will be hoping that LOWTON can get him a welcome winner in this 7f handicap.

The lightly raced colt by Pivotal shed his maiden over track and trip on soft going in May and followed that by getting up in a tight finish to land a novice at Newcastle in late June on the Tapeta.

A step up in class for a valuable Ascot handicap in July found him out to some degree off a stiff opening mark of 89 but, after a short break, he was an eye-catcher last month at York (7f, good to soft), finishing fourth of 17 after having met his share of trouble in the run.

He runs off the same mark here and, back on a track that has been kind before and with testing conditions underfoot holding no fears, Callum Rodriguez’s mount should put up a bold showing.

Selection: Lowton @ SP with Betfair
