Aussies are sitting on $18.5 billion of unwanted clothes, with most people having unworn outfits worth $952 in their wardrobes, a report has found.

Meanwhile, according to a report commissioned by Uber and Australian Red Cross, the rise in the cost of living is taking a toll on Australians’ ability to give back.

Now, the Australian Red Cross has teamed up with Uber to help people donate clothes to help Aussies in need, without having to take them to a charity shop themselves, or spend any money.

On Saturday October 21 free clothing pick-ups are on offer as part of the Australian Red Cross Clothing Drive.

Richard Wood, Head of Retail at Australian Red Cross, said it’s an easy way to help.

“Australian Red Cross brings people and communities together in times of need and participating in the Clothing Drive, you are enabling us to raise funds to continue delivering this work,” Wood said.

Dom Taylor, General Manager of Uber ANZ added it was a “no brainer.”

“If you want to support vulnerable Aussie communities but aren’t sure how to beyond cash donations or volunteering your time, consider spring cleaning your wardrobe and donating your preloved clothing,” Taylor said.

Uber is offering free Uber Package delivery to Red Cross Shops in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Bookings can be made on the Uber app on the day from 9am to 4pm by selecting the package option and selecting “Red Cross Shop” as the destination.

Last year’s event saw 3400 donations made.

Items should be clean and in good condition.
