York racing tips

2.25: Cogitate 10/3 – 1pt & Indian Run 8/1 each-way 0.5pts

Indian Run could be overpriced here at 8/1 – considering he could be improving stepping up in trip.

The brown colt finished third behind Starlust on debut, who is the favourite under Ryan Moore in the Nursery Handicap in the final race of the day,

He placed third at Newbury over 6f, also behind Array, before winning a Class 2 maiden at Ascot.

Being upped to 7f is an unknown for most of these and they could be unexposed at this trip.

But Cogitate won on debut in style ahead of some nice horses and has to be fancied on that basis – especially being almost a safer play with the distance in mind, Edwardian for instance has only been seen over 5f so far.

Cogitate’s win under Hollie Doyle was impressive and showed real promise as it was that comfortable and now under William Buick may make another taking run.

3.00, Voltigeur Stakes: Gregory 11/8 – 2pts

Tipped this horse in the antepost at 9/4 and he’s now the big favourite as the field has been whittled down to just five runners.

Gregory was one of just a couple of favourites to win at the entirety of Royal Ascot 2023 and the unbeaten Golden Horn colt looks like stepping it up here after that victory in the Queen’s Vase.

That was over 1m6f but he’s well suited to this distance too and has that turn of foot.

Tower Of London looks like a nice each-way price and whoever Ryan Moore ends up siding with here could be one to follow in too.

3.35, Juddmonte International: Paddington 8/13 – 2pts

This is the Group 1 feature race of the first day of the York Ebor Festival.

Contested over 1m21/2f is made for the Aidan O’Brien-trained horse Paddington who is the supremely popular colt by Siyouni has gone seven races unbeaten. Stepped up to Group 1 level in May and beat Cairo convincingly by two lengths in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

He then headed to the St James’s Palace Stakes to take on Chaldean and won by an even more convincing margin at Royal Ascot.

If that wasn’t enough he won the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, beating Emily Upjohn and then won his fourth Group 1 in a row at Goodwood earlier in August.

He’s unsurprisingly the odds-on favourite and only has Mostahdaf as a close contender in the betting.

Paddington coped with being upped from a mile to 1m2f and that was up against the likes of Emily Upjohn and gets given another 7lb by Mostahdaf like he did against the former.

4.10: Aztec Empire 13/2 each-way – 1pt

There’s numerous routes you could go in this race – it’s an incredibly tough 14-runner race over an extended 2m, for the Stayers Handicap.

There’s a huge amount of weight between the top-rated Solent Gateway (95) and Grappa Nonino (72) with a variety in the middle.

One who could still be well-weighted is the number 3, Aztec Empire, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Oisin Murphy.

He has consistent form over this distance and is still relatively unexposed being lightly raced, especially on the turf.

The four-year-old came a decent third on good ground at Newbury behind Sweet William and under Murphy could be on the way to improve greatly.

4.45: Designer 9/2 – 1pt

Designer won this race last year by a convincing margin under David Egan and was upped 10lb for that victory – she comes here just 5lb higher after subsequent defeats but still while running well enough in competitive form, including in listed company twice and blew the start at Ayr two starts ago.

Is often up there at the finish and Buick has his first go on board the filly which makes her even more of interest.

Pillow Talk may warrant each-way backing at 10/1 though under in-form Danny Tudhope.
