‘Trashy’; Star trend can’t be stopped

Famous Gen Zers are ditching the sleek look that ruled the mid-2000s and are bringing back a trashy, chaotic style.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but smudged eyeliner, cargo pants and a slightly dishevelled appearance is in. Ironic slogan T-shirts, baggy shorts and even trucker hats have returned, and it is getting embraced by all the ‘it’ girls.

The clean girl aesthetic is over and the messy girl look has replaced it.

In the iconic words of Taylor Swift: “Are you ready for it?”

The days of celebrities trying to flog waist trainers and stilettos as the pinnacle of style may have ended abruptly.

Instead, we’ve returned to the Fashion that Lindsay Lohan was rocking in her peak messy era and it is a pretty wild fashion change. We’ve gone from skin tight dresses in neutral tones to plaid mini skirts paired with cowboy boots.

It is enough to have Gwyneth Paltrow shivering in her pure cashmere matching set.

The fashion look is far less about looking chic and expensive and is far more about looking like you could have bought your hat from a petrol station. Simply put, if you are wearing something your mum would compliment you on, you are not dressing trashy enough.

It is now chic to be grungy, mismatched and looking slightly like you could benefit from a little wash. You want to dress like the Olsen twins in the 2000s not like the Olsen twins now.

It is a very specific look. So think plaid, baggy outfits, confusing layering but also short skirts.

Confused?

Don’t panic just scan the Instagram accounts of the newly famous people and you’ll get that there’s a clear theme. You want to look like you aren’t trying but also it is very hard to wear that many layers – so it does require effort.

Singer Olivia Rodrigo, 20, is one of the leaders of the trend. She’s burst onto the scene with her catchy tunes and is often spotted with slogan T-shirts, plaid and slightly ugly sunglasses.

Similarly, Billie Eilish, 21, favours basketball shorts over a mini dress and she’s become famous for her messy hair.

Even Sabrina Carpenter, 24, is helping lead the charge, and she has the weirdly long shorts to prove it.

Singer Maisie Peters, 23, is another that has embraced a more chaotic look. The slogan T-shirt is part of her everyday vibe and yes, that is now cool again.

The Kim Kardashian sleek, curated, and thoughtful look is out. So anything skin-tight that looks super co-ordinated is not in.

We can all remember in the mid 2000s when it became very cool to dress super sexy. High heels, tight Clothes, and tight jeans were all the rage, and all the celebrities wore them.

It was hyper sexy and it always focused on showing off women’s curves and it never looked very comfortable.

Famous people would turn up to events with their clothes practically painted on. Think of all the outfits that Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox used to always make look so bloody cool.

It was such a different time that anything baggy was considered strictly home clothes and not the outfit you’d be showing off on Instagram.

The new wave of fashion is the opposite it’s quirky, playful and not always sexy. Young women are playing with clothes, textures, and styles and forgoing raw sex appeal for almost silly.

The new fashion era is interestingly less about highlighting women’s bodies and far more about the clothes and it is making the next generation of stars very interesting to look at.
