Tesla adds more potential FSD testing jobs in Australia

Earlier this month, Tesla started hiring for “Vehicle Operator” roles in Australia. It now appears that Tesla has started to hire for managerial roles for “ADAS” (Advanced driver assistance system) operators.

It was first noticed by an EV enthusiast and reader of The Driven, ARM, on Twitter.

The latest positions are advertised in multiple locations along the east coast along with a “Lead ADAS Test Operator” role in Western Australia. This role has requirements covering data collection and improving vehicle performance.

“Support the data collection effort to improve vehicle performance” and “Lead real-world testing according to test specifications” are some of the key outlined tasks outlined by Tesla.

ADAS systems are available on vehicles by most manufacturers, but Tesla takes it one step further with the availability of Autopilot and its full-self-driving (FSD) suite.

Last week at Tesla’s Q2 earnings call, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, reiterated the importance of FSD and how the company plans to expand its operation, including licensing the system to other manufacturers.

“We are very open to licensing our full self-driving software and hardware to other car companies. We are already in discussions with, early discussions, with a major OEM about using the Tesla FSD, so we are not trying to keep it to ourselves, we are more than happy to license it to others.”

During the same call, Musk also highlighted that the FSD system had clocked over 300 million miles. Part of the exponential growth has been due to the release of the FSD system to more customers than it had previously as the system improves with each iterative update.

This includes testing the fleet with Tesla’s own vehicle operators and ADAS data collectors just as the roles in Australia are starting to highlight in recent weeks.

The company has been broadening the rollout of FSD Beta trials across many other international markets in recent months with a focus on Europe, Asia and more recently Oceania given similar roles are also being advertised in New Zealand.

It was first noticed last month when “Test Operator” roles were advertised in Europe. Countries with these roles included Finland, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Italy, Turkiye, Austria, The Netherlands, Sweden and the UK.

Of these countries, UK roles were positive to see for Australian context as it indicated that Tesla was considering FSD training right-hand-drive markets too. This has since led to similar job advertisements here in Australia.

With the increase in recent testing and broader rollout being considered by Tesla’s FSD team, it’s an exciting time for thousands of FSD customers outside of the US.

As the system improves with more localised data and testing, the release of the system in markets like Australia is approaching closer. We look forward to covering its local developments in the coming months.
