Horse racing tips: Southwell, Lingfield and Pontefract – Monday June 12

Monday’s five race meetings across the UK and Ireland comprise National Hunt cards at Lingfield (2.00-5.00pm) and Roscommon (4.38-8.18), plus Flat racing from Southwell (2.15-5.25), Windsor (5.08-8.40) and Pontefract (6.00-9.00).

Our nap runs at Southwell and is an Amy Murphy runner bidding to build on some promising recent performances to shed his maiden tag in a 2m 4f hurdle at the Nottinghamshire racecourse.

SHANDANCER remains a maiden after 15 runs but he has shown enough to suggest that a first success is not far away, particularly over hurdles where he has been knocking on the door recently.

After having wind surgery in March, Amy Murphy’s six-year-old finished second on both subsequent appearances last month. He was less than a length behind the winner at Fontwell (2m 5½f, good) and went even closer when he missed out on the top prize by just a neck at Stratford (2m 6f, good). The winner of the latter race has franked the form with another victory since.

Shandancer has been wearing headgear in his recent races and his connections opt for blinkers instead of cheekpieces this time. If they can get more improvement from the horse, this could be the day he finally breaks his maiden, which would be a nice reward for his consistency on the track.

Selection: Shandancer @ 10/3 with Paddy Power

Horse racing tips: Lingfield, 4.30

KING OF SPEED lived up to his name last time out when scoring over 6f at Leicester. That was his second success on turf and there is likely to be much more to come from the son of Acclamation.

Mark Loughnane’s four-year-old gelding steps up to 7f here and the way he stayed on at Leicester suggests he will have no problems with the trip as he bids to follow up from a 3lb higher mark, especially with talented apprentice Billy Loughnane on board to negate that rise with his claim.

A Royal Ascot runner at two who was once rated as high as 78, King of Speed should be able to take care of these five rivals if he produces anything close to his best over this new trip.

Selection: King Of Speed @ 9/4 with Paddy Power

Horse racing tips: Pontefract 8.30

OSO RAPIDO is on a nine-race losing run but has been eased to a Class 5 company, which makes life easier for the capable sprinter. Three of his four wins on turf have come over today’s 6f trip, including  a handicap victory over course and distance in September 2021.

The ground should be right for the son of Kodiac, who enjoys good going over the summer. His first couple of runs of the campaign came in far from ideal condition and can be forgiven.

Daniel Tudhope has been booked by connections for this assignment, which is a big positive. And his mark is now 5lb lower than his last success so, while his recent form indicates the horse has it all to do, the handicapper has given him a big chance and he is more than good enough to take advantage.

Selection: Oso Rapido @ 10/1 with Paddy Power
