Horse racing predictions: Huntingdon, Ayr and Brighton – Tuesday May 23

With the Flat season in full swing and the long summer evenings imminent, Tuesday is another bumper day of racing action with seven meetings across Britain and Ireland.

In the afternoon, they race at Wolverhampton (2.10-5.15) and Brighton (2.23-5.26) on the level alongside Punchestown (1.45-5.20) and Huntingdon (2.30-5.30) over jumps, while later it’s Gowran Park (4.35-8.10) and Ayr (6.00-9.00) on the level alongside Hexham (5.50-8.50) over obstacles.

Tuesday’s nap is well handicapped on old form and could take advantage of a drop in class at Huntingdon.

Horse racing tips: Huntingdon 5.30

Fans of Only Fools and Horses will be in clover here with both Dellboy Trotter and Cheer’s Delboy in the mix, but the ‘cushty’ road to a tidy profit might be RED FORCE ONE for trainer Philip Kirby.

The eight-year-old son of Lethal Force has seven wins on the Flat and two over hurdles on his CV. Three of those wins came last summer on the level, while he also boasts a July hurdles win, so it’s safe to suggest he is now coming into the right time of year for his hopes of more success.

He was well held at Wetherby and Catterick either side of a winter lay-off, but last month’s fifth over 2m1f on good ground at Cheltenham came in a much stronger race than this one.

An early mistake didn’t help, but he stayed on late for a never-threatening fifth. He has been eased 3lb and now has Joe Williamson claiming 5lb, while the longer trip and lower grade are positives for him. He’s a well-handicapped Horse relative to his best form.

Horse racing tips: Ayr 7.00

Woven was a winner this month on heavy ground at Doncaster, coming through stylishly to land the prize for Michael Dods. He is rated 6lb higher now and may find that FAST AND LOOSE is well able to turn the tables with that turnaround in his favour.

The son of No Nay Never was a winner last summer at Catterick over 6f on fast ground as a novice. He also had near-misses afterwards at Pontefract and over this track and trip before signing his season off with a second (by a nose) at Newcastle on the Tapeta in October.

A front-runner, he wasn’t able to dominate entirely at Doncaster and the chances are the prevailing soft ground wasn’t favourable on his first run in 200 days.

With that good course form in mind – and the fact he is getting weight from the field now on his return to Scotland representing a trainer with a recent 20 per cent strike-rate – he’s fancied to close the gap from Doncaster.

Horse racing predictions: Brighton 3.23

This 7f handicap looks like an open contest and it’s worth placing some trust in SHALFA to find her best on this return to the seaside layout.

The Ribchester filly won here last August on fast ground, having gone close previously at Yarmouth in similar conditions. She was beaten a length on her final outing, also at Yarmouth.

She moved from Marco Botti in the winter to join this trainer and made her debut for her new yard at Kempton 13 days ago, her first run in 255 days. She looked like she needed that outing and should be sharper this time out.

Eased 1lb by the assessor for that comeback effort, she can build on it over a track and trip that hold positive memories.

Selection: Shalfa @ SP with Betfair
