LIVE: Two Million Reasons Why Australian Jason Moloney’s World Title Shot Is A ‘must-win’ Fight

Jason Moloney is hoping to return home as a world title holder and victory on Sunday against Vincent Astrolabio could put the Australian in a position for an epic $2 million showdown.

Of course, first Moloney (25-2) must win this weekend after failing his previous two world title shots, this time facing Astrolabio (18-3) for the WBO bantamweight world title.

If he is able to do that, foxsports.com.au reported earlier this week that there is talk of a possible $2 million Australian fight with Nonito Donaire.

Watch heavyweights Joseph Parker v Faiga ‘Django’ Opelu, the return of Nikita Tszyu plus former AFL stars Cameron Mooney and Tom Bellchambers in a pro-boxing debut. LIVE on Main Event available on Kayo & Foxtel, Wednesday 24 May 7PM AEST. ORDER NOW >

The WBC only recently approved for Donaire to fight Alejandro Santiago for their vacant bantamweight title, so the Filipino will also need to win that fight to set up the potential Moloney meeting.

Then there is the tantalising prospect of Jason headlining the card down under alongside brother Andrew, who next week fights Junto Nakatani for the WBO super-flyweight title on the Devin Haney-Vasiliy Lomachenko undercard.

It is why Jason is more motivated than ever to finally capture the world title, making up for missed opportunities against Emmanuel Rodriguez and Naoya Inoue in 2018 and 2020.

“This is a must win for me,” Moloney told foxsports.com.au this week.

“We’ve already spoken with Bob who said if we take care of business, if we both win our titles, then there’s the very real prospect of a doubleheader in Australia.

“And that’s what I want.

“I want to bring this title to Australia, put on some big events and get the whole country behind us.”

MOLONEY VS ASTROLABIO FIGHT START TIME

Moloney and Astrolabio will be fighting in the co-main event before Janibek Alimkhanuly and Steven Butler square off for the WBO middleweight world title.

The main pay-per-view part of the card is set to begin at 12pm AEST, with just the one fight between Gabriel Flores Jr and Derrick Murray before the Australian’s latest title shot.

With that in mind, expect for Moloney and Astrolabio to face off at 12.30pm at the earliest and 1pm at the latest, depending on how long the earlier fight lasts.
