KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ehsan Mani isn’t happy with ICC’s new revenue distribution model.
  • BCCI is set to get richer by $230 million per year in the next cycle.
  • There’s no appetite for countries to stand up to India, says Mani.
Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani slammed the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the proposed revenue distribution model that will see the Indian Cricket Board receive a major share of the pie in the next four-year cycle from 2024-27. The new revenue distribution model will make the BCCI richer by approximately $230 million per year, which accounts for almost 38.5% percent of ICC’s US$ 600 million annual earnings, as reported by espncricinfo.
“The proposed revenue distribution model will be giving the most money to the country that needs it the least, which makes no sense. I think it’s very unfortunate. There’s no strategic thinking about the development of the global game. There’s no vision. It only takes one downtown in an economic cycle for the ICC members to be affected. There is far too much reliance on India,” Mani told Forbes.

Talking about the future of the game, the former ICC President said that the game needs to grow in the United States and Africa, and instead of the 11 percent share that has been allocated to them in the next cycle, the global associates deserve at least 30 percent of the share.

Unfortunately, there’s no appetite for countries to stand up to India. The governance review, which was discussed when I was on board, has gone quiet.

“I would have put $20-30 million into the U.S. You also need to grow the game in Africa; that’s the future. I think the global game (Associates) should have been allocated at least 30 percent (instead of 11 percent). That’s the only way to globalize the game. You have to give countries enough resources to not only develop their players but to pay them a fair amount, especially with the IPL and other T20 leagues targeting players,” he added.

“It’s not the BCCI (India’s governing body). There are benefits to Indian companies to advertise in the ICC events and worldwide. India is not playing on its own; they are playing against other members. It’s a two-way street,” he further explained.

The former PCB chairman urged the directors of the ICC to stand up to India and introspect about the future of the game, considering they are the guardians of the game.

“Unfortunately, there’s no appetite for countries to stand up to India. The governance review, which was discussed when I was on board, has gone quiet. I don’t think there should be more than 12 board members, and at least seven of them should be independent directors. The directors of the ICC need to stand up and look at where they are taking this game. They are guardians of the international game. They don’t act like that sometimes,” he signed off.
