Alex Murdaugh Found Guilty Of Murder (Updated)

Alex Murdaugh, the disgraced South Carolina attorney who was accused of murdering his wife and son in order to gain sympathy and divert attention from financial crimes that posed a threat to his reputation, was found guilty on Thursday of killing them.

The jury, consisting of seven men and five women, took three hours to deliberate and ultimately convicted the 54-year-old Murdaugh of two counts of murder for the fatal shootings of Margaret, 52, and their youngest son, Paul, 22, in June 2021. He faces a minimum of 30 years to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Additionally, Murdaugh was convicted of two counts of possessing a weapon during a violent crime, which could result in five more years of imprisonment.

As the verdict was announced, Murdaugh blinked repeatedly but maintained a stoic expression. Each juror was asked if the verdict was correct, and they all responded affirmatively.

Sentencing has been postponed until 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
