Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner General Resigns: KRA Announces Reorganization

Commissioner General Githii Mburu of the Kenya Revenue Authority has resigned from his position with immediate effect to pursue personal interests. Mburu's departure marks the end of his tenure at the authority, which began in July 2019, and he has been replaced by Rispah Simiyu, the Commissioner of Domestic Taxes, who will serve in an acting capacity.

Before his appointment as Commissioner General, Mburu served in the authority's intelligence division and was instrumental in leading KRA to a historic tax collection milestone last year. During his tenure, KRA achieved record-breaking success by collecting Ksh 2.031 trillion in the financial year 2021/2022, which is an increase from Ksh 1.669 trillion collected in the previous fiscal year.

Mburu's resignation follows in the footsteps of other high-ranking former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointees who have stepped aside. The KRA Board has also made changes to the management team in light of his departure. With the elevation of Rispah Simiyu as the acting Commissioner General, Pamela Ahago now assumes the role of Commissioner of Domestic Taxes in an acting capacity.

Additionally, David Mwangi has been appointed as Commissioner in charge of Customs and Border Control, and David Yego will lead Intelligence, Strategic Operations, Investigations, and Enforcement as Commissioner. Nancy Nge'tich has also been appointed acting Commissioner of Corporate Support Services.

The reorganization of KRA is taking place as Kenya sets an ambitious target to raise Ksh 4 trillion through the full digitization of revenue sources.
