The 5 Most Iconic Star Wars Helmets

The 5 Most Iconic Star Wars Helmets

When it comes to iconic helmets, few franchises can match the sheer variety of Star Wars. From the anonymous troopers of the Imperial Army to the imposing Sith Lords of the dark side, the helmets worn by the characters in Star Wars are as varied as the universe itself. However, there are a few helmets that stand out above the rest. This guide will walk through the most iconic Star Wars Helmets to date.

1. Darth Vader

One of the most instantly recognisable helmets in pop culture, Darth Vader’s helmet is synonymous with the Sith Lord himself. Vader’s helmet is unique in that it covers his entire head, leaving only his mouth and eyes exposed. The design was to protect Vader’s burned face, which was disfigured when Obi-Wan Kenobi struck him down in Revenge of the Sith. Vader’s helmet has a built-in respirator, allowing him to breathe despite his injuries. The helmet is black, with a large red eye lens that covers Vader’s right eye. The front of the helmet is adorned with a trio of silver spikes meant to intimidate Vader’s enemies.

Vader’s helmet has been damaged on a couple of notable occasions. Once by Skywalker’s former Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, in an episode of the Star Wars: Rebels animated series. Another time Vader took a blow to his helmet from his Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, which we saw in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. On both occasions, we saw what remained of Anakin Skywalker underneath his new Sith-corrupted exterior.

We only saw Vader’s face without his iconic helmet once when the Death Star exploded, and the life force was leaving him. Luke Skywalker, his son, removed his helmet to see his son with his own eyes.

2. Stormtrooper

The Stormtroopers are the cogs in the Galactic Empire’s system. Their helmets were designed to strike fear into their enemies hearts with emotionless uniformity. The helmets are white, with a black visor that covers the wearer’s eyes. The visor is meant to keep the trooper’s identity hidden and protect them from enemy fire. The helmet also has a built-in respirator, allowing troopers to breathe in hostile environments.

The Stormtrooper helmet was first seen in Star Wars: A New Hope, where the Imperial troops used it on board the Death Star. The helmet would go on to appear in every subsequent movie in the original trilogy, as well as in spin-offs like Rogue One and Solo. The helmet has undergone a few design changes over the years, but the basic shape has remained the same.

3. Clone Trooper

The third spot on this list goes to the helmet that preceded the Stormtrooper in the Star Wars timeline: the clone trooper helmet. The helmet is worn by all members of the clone army who fought in the Clone Wars. These soldiers were made from the DNA of bounty Hunter Jango Fett on planet Kamino, who also donned some iconic armour.

Whilst the Stormtrooper helmets are more synonymous with Star Wars, and there is no denying that the Clone Trooper helmets are iconic in their own right. The Stormtrooper’s helmets were based on uniformity; the Clones took a different approach. The helmets could be blue, green, or orange to display their regiment and class. Many types of clones were introduced across the Republic era of Star Wars that varied in appearance. The most iconic arguably being Anakin’s 501st regiment, led by Captain Rex. The clones’ differentiation from the Imperials allowed fans to get attached to them through The Clone Wars republic era.

4. Boba Fett

Despite having very little screen time, the Mandalorian bounty hunter Boba Fett is one of the most popular Star Wars characters. Part of Boba Fett’s appeal is his unique helmet, which is based on the helmets worn by Mandalorian warriors. The helmet is red and green, with a T-shaped visor that covers the wearer’s eyes. The helmet also has a breathing apparatus, which is necessary for Boba Fett to survive in the harsh environment of Tatooine.

Boba Fett’s helmet was heavily damaged in Return of the Jedi when he was knocked into the Sarlacc pit by Han Solo. However, the helmet was later recovered and returned to Boba Fett by Din Djarin after the events of The Mandalorian Season 2. We see Boba in his full armour in The Book Of Boba Fett.

5. Din Djarin

Different people have different interpretations of Mandalorian culture. But one thing that will always be associated with Mandalore is its remarkable and unique armour designs. The Mandolorian helmet is the mark of a legend, and it’s now synonymous with Star Wars’ greatest new hero: the Mandalorian. Other famous characters from the Star Wars universe, Jango and his son Boba Fett also wore Mandalorian armour.

The T-shaped visor, drop-down viewfinder/antenna, and rigid Beskar construction make this the coolest headgear for anyone, loyal clan member or dangerous bounty hunter alike.

There you have it! The 5 most iconic Star Wars helmets. From Darth Vader to The Mandalorian, these helmets have become synonymous with the Star Wars universe. Whether you’re a fan of the original trilogy or the new projects, there’s no denying that these helmets are some of the most iconic in pop culture history.
