“Deadly For Democracy”: Ex Supreme Court Judge Tears Into Law Minister

Delhi, India: At a public event on Friday, former Supreme Court Judge Rohinton Fali Nariman, who was a member of the collegium before retiring in August 2021, squared off with Law Minister Kiren Rijiju amid intensifying attacks from the Centre on the Collegium system of appointments to higher judiciary.

Mr. Nariman reminded the Law Minister that it is his “bounden duty” to accept the judgments of the court, regardless of whether they are “right or wrong,” calling his public comments on the judiciary a “diatribe.” He also took on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who has questioned the basic structure doctrine and said, “Thank God it has come to stay,” without naming him.
