JULY 1955

Flinders Street Viaduct, before drones!

Aerial photography was a lot trickier in 1955 than it is today! In the case of the July 1955 Victorian Railways Newsletter, the department's photographer has taken to the skies for this early view of Melbourne's waterfront. Not only is the original 4 track Viaduct front and centre in the photograph, but the V.R.'s Head Office building is in the bottom left foreground and the railway viaduct for the Port Melbourne and St. Kilda Lines can be seen crossing the Yarra River behind the newsletter's moniker.

And maybe a reader can help me identify the long curved and covered building alongside the viaduct. I want to say the Melbourne Fish Markets?

Anyway, the historic early Melbourne cover ranks at Number 88 on my Top 100 VR Newsletter Covers of all-time.
