Sofia Vergara has only had one significant acting role since the end of Modern Family in 2020. That role was as the antagonist in the animated film Koati, which came out in 2021. However, that will soon change thanks to Vergara's departure from the Griselda Netflix miniseries. The true story of Griselda Blanco, a Colombian woman who founded and led one of history's most profitable cartels, is told in the miniseries.
In the series, Sofia Vergara will play Griselda Blanco, also known as the "Black Widow." The series is directed by Andrés Baiz and executive produced by Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard. Along with Vanessa Ferlito, Juliana Aidén Martinez, Alberto Guerra, Alberto Ammann, Christian Tappan, Diego Trujillo, Paulina Davila, Gabriel Sloyer, Martin Rodriguez, José Ziga, Maximiliano Hernández, Julieth Restrepo, showrunner will be Ingrid Escajeda.

According to the first image that was published by Deadline, Sofia Vergara's portrayal of Griselda appears to be a pivotal one for the Colombian actress. For her performance as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family, Vergara was nominated for an Emmy four times, but she never won. Vergara might have the chance to win an Emmy for the first time with Griselda.
Interestingly, Griselda Blanco will soon be portrayed on screen by more than just Sofia Vergara. The Godmother, which tells the story of Blanco's rise and fall, will also feature Jennifer Lopez as the character. Reed Morano (The Handmaid's Tale), Regina Corrado (Deadwood), and Terence Winter (The Sopranos, The Wolf of Wall Street) will write and direct The Godmother.

It will be interesting to see how Jennifer Lopez and Sofia Vergara approach this notorious cartel figure. Griselda began filming in January, and The Godmother is currently in pre-production. Neither film has a release date. It wouldn't be astounding if the two of them have comparable delivery windows, so we could get a few different depictions of Blanco and takes on her story around a similar time.
